UK Sikhs join 'headscarf' protest

British Sikhs will descend on the French embassy in London on Saturday to protest against a planned ban of religious clothing in schools.
The protest will include Sikh World War 2 veterans who say they fought for France's freedom wearing turbans.

Organisers say at least 30 coach loads of protestors will be there to show solidarity with French Sikhs.

Jagroop Singh said making Sikhs remove their turbans was akin to making people "walk around naked".

1. I know several Sikhs

and while some choose to go "secular" and set aside the turban, most wouldn't be caught dead without them.

I don't know what all the fuss over religious attire is anyway. People who feel threatened by a kufi, turban, hijab or whatever need to get over it.

2. It is not that they feel threatened, there have been some instances

in France of "Jew-bashing" in schools, and it was felt that if the schools banned yarmulkes, kippots, and prayer shawls it would only be fair to ban, kufis, turbans, hijabs, crosses, and crucifies.

I think it is silly. The way to prevent attacks like that is through education, not hiding it.

3. I think it has more to do with appeasing Le Pen supporters, who

are displeased by the visibility of so many Muslims, and banning hijab is a sure-fire way to get people to take their kids out of the public schools, which will sweep the offending group neatly into madrassas in private homes and keep things nice and tidy for the wonderful folks who brought you Charles Martel :)
