PRINCETON -- Secretary of State Colin L. Powell today defended the war in Iraq, saying the United States made the right decision even though intelligence reports that Saddam Hussein had stockpiled weapons of mass destruction have not been borne out. snip

"Don't let anybody be confused by the debate that is going on," Powell told a crowd of about 750 people. "America did the right thing." snip

Powell's appearance drew a group of about 40 protesters who gathered along Nassau Street across from the entrance to the university. Some held signs calling Powell a liar, murderer and war criminal.

Among them was Sue Niederer of Hopewell, whose son, Army Lt. Seth Dvorin, was killed on Feb. 4 by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Niederer decried the inability of U.S. inspectors to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

What a liar! Does he think we're all suffering from amnesia? A year ago before the United Nations Security Council, Powell was telling us just exactly how much anthrax and VX Saddam had in his arsenal. The question of Saddam weapons stockpiles, not his weapons programs activities, was the focus. It was a lie. This is criminal.

Powell drew parallels between terrorist threat and that posed by the Soviet empire during Kennan's time.

However, the terrorist threat had nothing to do with Iraq. There was no connection between Saddam and al Qaida. To continue to use this rationale is simply insulting.

The war was not justified. What would be justified would bring those who planned it and those who sent our troops into combat before an international tribunal. That include Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and Powell.

The issue isn't Saddam Hussein, even though they want to focus on him. The issue is that our country was caught manufacturing a war. The war achieved nothing, except the death, destruction and chaos in a third world country.

Iraq will be the anchor that drags our country down. We can never spend enough to achieve our goals. But we can never walk away. (oh, wait yes we can...we just walked away from Afghanistan.)
