1. Great news. I hope they find the remaining two. I felt for sure
the water would be too cold to survive this, so I'm happy to hear it.

They just pulled that update...

It was reported to be Marquis Cooper, but the update has been pulled.

3. I gotta hand it to the Coast Guard...
I saw the video of the boat floating upside down. How they found that in that open sea 25 miles away from where they were fishing is incredible.

5. I'm still amazed that 4 (big) men thought it
a good idea to go miles out into the gulf in a 21 foot boat. That's not so big.

6. This is at least the second time they fished that spot, too.
The news said that they had gone out to the very same spot previously. No way. 21' center console is not a big enough boat for that.

7. I've got a friend who has a boat about that size...
He routinely goes out 30 - 40 miles...he watches the weather very carefully, and is extremely cautious. He's been doing it for years...

12. It's possible they didn't know the impending weather
or they just didn't pay enough attention. My boss used to have a 28 foot fishing boat he sailed out of Abaco Island Bahamas. We went out once--in good weather--about 20 miles and one of the engines died, and the other was sputtering. Even though it was good weather, the seas were still 5 ft... anyway, it only took 90 minutes to get out to our fishing spot East of the Bahamas, but it took six hours to sputter back in on one engine.

I guess my point is this is not at all unusual for a group of dedicated deep sea hobbyists to do... unless they were aware of how bad the weather was supposed to get.

Hope they find them all. Fingers crossed.

15. This wasn't a sudden storm.
The winds have been high for days. I flew into Clearwater-St Pete about noon yesterday. Nice and sunny out, but a 25-30 mph wind. And, it would be worse on the gulf.

10. Must have been a bad update...
Looks like the three are still unaccounted for. I'm going to delete the headline...

Sorry.

9. One question I haven't heard asked: Are sharks a factor
in those waters? And I didn't hear any mention of a second boater. Think that was a false headline on CNN because the coast guard guy didn't say that.

11. Sharks are around in all warm and some cold waters year round
and the Gulf is warm. Whether or not they were a factor before the remaining boaters drowned is anyone's guess.

It will be interesting to hear what happened when the survivor recovers.

13. I don't know how warm the gulf actually is. We've had a miserable
winter here, cold, though TX is on the other side of the gulf. I'm sure it's not warm. But that works in our favor, too. Keeps hurricanes at bay (at gulf?), for awhile anyway.

I do know the gulf stream in the Atlantic off the east coast of Florida is supposed to be warm year-round and a breeding ground for sharks.

17. So it's colder near the shore?
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 03:55 PM by babylonsister
That makes no sense.

This says the average is 64 degrees. I do wonder how survivable that is.

14. The Gulf around Florida has more than it's share of Bulls and Hammerheads.
