Video of Dog Being Shot Causes Norway Stir
Video of Dog Being Shot Causes Norway Stir

By DOUG MELLGREN, Associated Press Writer

OSLO, Norway - A videotape set to music of Norwegian "peacekeepers" in Kosovo shooting dogs drew furious reactions in their homeland Friday.

The footage, called "Hotdog," aired on national TV on Thursday night and was edited to look and sound like a music video.

During the video, a soldier is shown shooting a dog at long range with a rifle, and another Norwegian "peacekeeper" appeared to empty his pistol into it at close range as the animal writhed in agony. It also shows a dog on a leash being shot.

"We see this as very serious and want to get to the bottom of it," said Cmdr. Thom Knustad, spokesman for the Norwegian military's operational command.

Norway has been a major contributor to many international "peacekeeping" operations, and prefers to see its soldiers as humane and effective.

1. Gee
Guys with guns who want to use them to shoot something?
What an outrageous improbability...

Okay... found it

My Norweigen is a bit rusty.... anyone translate?

There are operational reasons for shooting dogs. Is it pretty? No. But we do not know they were committing attrocities yet.

I can think of lots of reasons these dogs were shot.

4. yes, that was obscene. I have had to shoot dogs that were attacking
me or one of my guys. It is not a fun thing to do. But rabies sucks.

5. so every dog must be shot because it might potentially...
...carry rabies?

7. No, that is not what I said. I said there are reasons to shoot
dogs in military operations.
I have had to do it. I have only done it when a dog actually attacked someone, and that is the only time I would do it.
All I said was, rabies sucks. And that is a fact. Would you care to dispute my charactization of a dreadful disese process?

9. Alright everyone, calm down.
Everybody here loves dogs, and would never do anything to hurt one unless absolutely necessary.

Don't cross the wires.

I love dogs and I'd hate to shoot one too, but if I did have a gun and a dog surprised me with an attack, that gun may be the only thing between me and getting mauled.

And the sad part is, I've never had reason to do anything like that. But I do understand the necessity if doing so in a military operation. After all, dogs are hardwired to alert when someone not of the pack approaches; they can be used as cheap and effective sentries, or even messengers. I can easily see a need to kill one at range if in a peacekeeping operation.

Pumping multiple rounds into it? *sigh* It really depends. I'd only do it if the first shot wasn't clean, just to put the animal out of its misery. I would hate doing all of this, but I understand the sometime necessity of it.

 I love dogs. This is just... depressing.

6. Yeah, I bet.
But it's going to be pretty hard for these guys to come up with an excuse for shooting a dog on a leash.

10. We had to kill dogs, but we didn't shoot them

When I was at the Marine Barracks in Adak Alaska, one of our more unpleasant jobs was to "put down" the stray dogs nobody wanted. There was dependent housing on the island, the lifers stationed there could bring their families. Where you have families, you have pets. And where you have pets, you have pets breeding, and stupid, uncaring people walking away from their pets. We had strays. Our job was to collect the strays, and dispose of them. We had a way to gas them with auto exhaust; probably more humane then shooting them, but it was not pleasant duty.

My point is, they might not have been shooting them for sport. They may have been dealing with the problem of stray dogs.

12. Thank you, that is certainly one explination
In the field, as you know, Johnyawl... you have to use what you have, that would be firearms.

And to the asshole who is filling my email account with PETA shit, I like dogs much better than I like PETA assholes, keep it up. I love to see it.

14. That was my first thought, Scooter...

...if the SeaBees hadn't built that box for us, we'd probably been taking the poor mutts out in the tundra and shooting them.

I don't have all the facts, and I haven't seen the video, but I'm certainly not gonna jump to the conclusion that these guys are inhumane, sadistic, killers shooting those dogs for shits & giggles.

And fuck PETA. They're like religous fanatics, and if they had their way, none of us would be allowed to own pets.

16. my nephew was in Kosovo with the UN and the Danes. They
were told to shoot all stray dogs because of the food
shortages. He couldn't do it. It was too terrible for
him. I love him for it.
