Iraq's top Shiite cleric demands United Nations elections guarantees
Iraq's top Shiite cleric, who has insisted elections are necessary for a transfer of power on June 30, suggested he would accept a delay in voting but demanded UN guarantees that there will be no more postponements.

Still, many Shiite Muslims on Friday rejected a UN recommendation against early elections to shift power from the U.S.-led coalition to Iraqis, and insisted on a vote to create the next government.

Iraqi Shiite Muslims march Friday in Najif, in support of Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who had disrupted the American plan for the handover.

3. would Negroponte veto the UNSC resolution he's asking for?
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 06:43 PM by Aidoneus
even his patience seems to be wearing very thin on this..

In a yet-to-be-published-in-full interview with Germany's Der Spiegel, among other things he makes reference to an Iraqi intifada against the invaders if further stalling by the occupation authority is carried out. He uses obviously terroristic phrases like "a sovereign Iraq in every detail" as an obligation. His apparent acceptance of yet another delay is entirely conditional on the proposed UNSC resolution to act as a guarantee against no further manuevers.

He has made references to the consequences of this before, as Sadr recently had as well, alluding to the 1920 revolution against the British colonial occupation (with Sadr adding a mention of the '91 intifada against Saddam). Sistani & Sadr are making a habit of issuing competing condemnations of various occupation policies (not putting AKs on the street just yet, of course), but even the collaborator parties are showing pre-terror qualities and committing selfish crimes like independent thought and disagreement..

Also recently noted from the same source, Sistani has been quietly advising the various communities and tribal leaders to stay united, adding that "even silence, in these turbulent times, is evil".. urging them to "just unite, and count on me to stand up to the Americans!"..

(1st source for the above, 2nd source)

um.. I just don't think the crusade is going according to plans. Those definitely aren't flowers that they are thinking about throwing. Plusbad timing to spark these disagreements, with Ashura just around the corner.. the Shia uprising after Ashura was the third and most effective nail in the coffin of the Zionist occupation forces in Lebanon, are these idiots smart enough to avoid a recreation of this?
