Tour pushing immigration reform kicks off in R.I.
Source: AP

PROVIDENCE - A national tour calling for reform of the federal immigration system kicked off in Providence on Friday.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., is spearheading the National Family Unity Campaign for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to hear stories from immigrants at stops at more than a dozen churches across the country.

Gutierrez said the current laws and harsh enforcement is devastating to families.

He and other lawmakers and advocates want President Barack Obama to prioritize immigration reform.

They want a way for the nation’s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants to earn legal residency by agreeing to pay taxes, learn English and pay a fine

I hope Gutierrez is successful in bringing this issue to the front pages again. We can't use the economic crisis as an excuse not to address reform.

1. EVERYONE admits "something needs to be done".....

...It's being "realistic" with that something that is the problem. "shipping them home" is pretty unrealistic, unless we really want to become the fascist police state that bor/vannity/beck/savage/etc. envision. Ignoring is no answer, as we will continue to grow a population that lives in the shadows, doesn't accept the responsibility that a community requires, etc.

SOoooooo here it comes. They have to be dealt with in a fashion that will allow them to become part of the community in a constructive way, and yet will hold them accountable for their work, pleasure, life in general. We can't just send them all away, as some have been here for decades and have extended families and ties that would impact negatively more than just the illegal immigrant.

So....go to it "government". You KNOW the right wing wants to line up the cattle cars and ship them home or exterminate them. We just have to ignore such asinine mentalities and move forward with addressing this problem.

There is NO fence high enough to keep them out. So....what's it going to be?? Frankly, I'm not for giving them all citizenship, as though they would all even want it. There is a current process for legal immigration. That needs to be taken into account as well.
