Daschle satisfied with war progress
Daschle satisfied with war progress
http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2004/02/20/news/local/news05.prt
By Denise Ross, Journal Staff Writer

PIERRE - Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., on Thursday praised the Bush administration's war and nation-building work in Iraq and said he has no serious concerns about the lack of weapons of mass destruction.

Daschle told state chamber of commerce representatives meeting in the South Dakota capital that he is satisfied with the way things are going in Iraq.

"I give the effort overall real credit," Daschle said. "It is a good thing Saddam Hussein is no longer in power. It is a good thing we are democratizing the country."

He said he is not upset about the debate over pre-war intelligence on weapons of mass destruction, an issue that has dogged President Bush as Democratic presidential contenders have slogged through the primary season.

Ok, anyone else pissed at this besides me? This man is minority leader and he thinks things are going well there?

North Dakota people, what the HELL is wrong with him? I thought Lisa
Murkowski shamed my state every time her entitlement mouth opened but I have to say, you're getting a bigger schelacking from this dipwit.

5. This is why he has to go
These are appropriate comments for a Democratic Senator in a conservative state to make (politically), they are not appropriate for the Demcoratic leader in the Senare. We need a leader who is not constantly looking over his shoulder because he has a conservative constituency. We need someone like Dick Durbin from illinois

54. You are 100% correct...
A democrat from a conservative state may have to make noises like Daschle just did to stay in office, but someone like Byrd or Kennedy (only younger) needs to be the Leader...someone with a safe seat.

Our candidates are showing it's now safe to run straight at Bush, calling him on his record...while Daschle sounds like he's in a time warp from a year ago! There is no future in being nice, just now. The GOP isn't.

Let's face it, our party is perceived to be so far left of mainstream, that even the slightest move back to the middle by leadership entails outrage from a few of you out there. Should he have said this during election season? Yes. That is if we want to win in November.

36. oh my
what complete stab in the back. Someone may have gotten to Daschle and threatened him in some way, It is the only think I can think of that would cause him to turn over to the other side--and that is what he has done. Must be a tremendous mess in the Senate. Daschle is lacking the stuff to carry us forward and onward to get rid of Bush. I hope Kerry has not fallen prey to this laissez faire attitude from his years in the Senate, also. That is why I admired Dean, and love Kucinich. Edwards has not been around or entrenched that long.

44. Wait a minute...maybe we need to let Daschle explain his remarks
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 04:53 PM by xray s
I jumped on him after reading the post, but looking at the entire article, I would like to know if the paper is trying to spin Daschle's comments as more pro-Bush administration than they really are.

He said he is not upset about the debate over pre-war intelligence on weapons of mass destruction, an issue that has dogged President Bush as Democratic presidential contenders have slogged through the primary season. "We can argue about the WMD and what we should have known," Daschle, the Senate minority leader, said.

That is not the same thing as saying he has no concerns about not finding WMD, which is the papers spin on these comments.

What is the editorial tilt of this newspaper?

Anyway, I want Daschle to explain this, then I'll make up my mind.

On edit; as far as the papers motivation, if they are right-leaning editorially, they may be trying to boost Bush by implying bipartisan support for his policies that isn't really there. Also, I would expect Daschle to praise the work of the troops in Iraq, especially since the article points out there are quite a few of them from SD.

But, if indeed Daschle believes the faulty intellegence and WMD issues are "no big deal", I will resume my  mode.

51. Shame on you, Daschle, collaborator. You, too, Mark Dayton.
Little in politics is more revolting than to realize one's own party is handmaiden to evil. The blood of over 10,000 Iraqi citizens and +500 US troops is equally on the hands of those zealots who gave the orders and those tepid souls who stood by nodding in approval.

Bush did not make this war alone. Nor can he sustain it alone. Politicians like Daschle grease empire's wheels by manufacturing public consent at home.

For example, here's my senator, Mark Dayton of Minnesota, last week strewing roses across the latest departure of National Guard victims being sent to the slaughter. All are heroes; their purpose is noble; the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Yadda yadda yadda - lies the aged use to get the young to die. It's a statement that might as easily have been written by Dick Cheney or Richard Perle:

Dayton Addresses Largest Minnesota Army Reserve Unit Deployed Since Operation Desert Shield
More than 500 Minnesota Reservists say goodbye to families and loved ones at St. Cloud send-off ceremony.

February 13, 2004

Fort Snelling, MN - Today U.S. Senator Mark Dayton addressed over 500 Minnesota Army Reservists and their families at a deployment ceremony in St. Cloud. The soldiers from the 367th Engineer (EN) Battalion (BN) have been called to active duty and are preparing to leave their jobs, families, and friends behind for an unspecified tour of duty in Southwest Asia. The unit will serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This represents the largest deployment of a Minnesota Army Reserve unit since Operation Desert Shield. The 367th EN BN is headquartered in St. Cloud, with companies in Brainerd, Duluth, and Mankato, and a detachment in Fergus Falls.

"These Minnesota soldiers are giving up their families, their home lives, and their careers to defend and protect our country at this critical moment in our nation's history," said Dayton. "As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I am well aware of the strains on our armed forces resulting from two-and-a-half years of continuous military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and continuing peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo.

"Ongoing troop rotations require units like the 367th Engineer Battalion to be called upon, and they have answered that call proudly and heroically. This is the largest Minnesota reserve unit mobilization in three current operations. With nothing less than our nation's future and the world's future at stake for all of us, our children and grandchildren, we are deeply grateful to these patriotic service members. We wish them godspeed."
