Poll Shows Broad Support for Obama’s Leadership
Source: NY Times

President Obama is benefiting from remarkably high levels of optimism and confidence among Americans about his leadership, providing him with substantial political clout as he confronts the nation’s economic challenges and opposition from nearly all Republicans in Congress, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

A month into Mr. Obama’s term, with his first big accomplishments, setbacks and political battles behind him, more than three-quarters of Americans said they are optimistic about the next four years with him as president. Similar percentages said they think he is bringing real change to the way things are done in Washington and that they have confidence in his ability to make the right decisions about the economy.

The ratings for Mr. Obama at this stage of his presidency are similar to those given in the early months for Ronald Reagan, who was the last president to take office with the country looking to be led out of economic gloom.

With a job approval rating of 63 percent, Mr. Obama remains in a strong position to sell his economic policies, with people expressing confidence in his leadership even if they do not fully understand his proposals. Yet the poll also captured skepticism about how effective his plans could be as well as a strain of populism that could test his ability to retain public support for efforts to prop up key sectors of the economy.

It sure looks like they'll have the usual 15 - 20 turnout for their "tea party" in Chicago. There is no uprising in the heartland. There's a bunch of people that remain pissed at the GOP, they don't buy the bullshit they're selling now, they see the GOP as obstructionist, and they damn sure won't be voting for them in 2010.

OTOH, I hope the GOP just keeps it up while the economy recovers, thanks to Obama, his stimulus plan, mortgage help and everything else.

1. The only uprising that will happen
is that against the Goddamn fat cat execs that have looted the treasury.

Fuck Santelli and his sort. I just saw his rant on youtube. What a weasel. He obviously doesn't understand what normal people are going through. And I couldn't believe his claim that he was "threatened" by the administration. What nonsense. Gibbs didn't do anything of the sort.

4. Ummm... no they're not
in fact the Democrats in Congress have like a 49% approval (43% disapprove). The Republics in Congress have like a 37% approval and like 43% disapproval. Don't have a link, but Google it. The story was around last week.

8. I saw that... but
here's a link to data on 2/19 - 2/22/09 showing Democrats in Congress with a 50% approval rating: http://www.pollingreport.com/cong_dem.htm

Even at a Congressional approval of 31% is 12% higher than it was last year. It's a 2 year high and a nice trend: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/02/18/congressional-approval-rating-soars-percent/

Here's data from Fox on the Democrats in Congress approval:
Dis
Approve approve (DK)
17-18 Feb 09 46% 45 9
Democrats 78% 17 6
Republicans 15% 77 8

6. The difference between Pres. Obama and Reagan is
that Pres. Obama didn't inherit a plane full of American hostages just released after being captive for a few years. Also, Reagan didn't inherit two wars and a financial collapse from a dumbass President who fucked things up for 8 years.

It ain't the same, and President Obama's numbers bode well for him....considering the shit he's dealing with.

16. Well, look at what he was left with-the bush legacy is still being formed
just look at those still being laid off, the ambitious plans needed to offset the bush disaster. It's good to have somebody in office with a sense of reason. We lacked that for 8 solid years. And oh, to the GOP leaders, it's your fault too yanno. Too, great job on reshaping your image, if anything you solidify what you are.
