WP page one, Kurtz: Kerry's Past to Star in Bush's Ads

Kerry's Past to Star in Bush's Ads
Reelection Team Says Democrat's 32-Year Career Is Rich in Ammunition
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, February 20, 2004; Page A01

President Bush's reelection campaign has decided to focus its coming advertising barrage not only on John F. Kerry's record as a senator but also on his days as an antiwar activist, a House candidate and Massachusetts's lieutenant governor.

"The beauty of John Kerry is 32 years of votes and public pronouncements," said Mark McKinnon, the chief media adviser. McKinnon suggested a possible tag line: "He's been wrong for 32 years, he's wrong now."

Campaign officials said in interviews that they plan substantial positive advertising about the president, focused on his proposals rather than accomplishments, when they begin spending tens of millions of dollars on the airwaves next month. But they made it clear that many of the ads will accuse the Democratic front-runner of "hypocrisy," in McKinnon's word, in part by reaching back into his early career.

A 1970 Harvard Crimson interview in which Kerry said that U.S. troops should be deployed "only at the directive of the United Nations" will be fair game, the officials said. If they run ads about that period, they will probably focus on Kerry's high-profile opposition to the Vietnam War and comments about U.S. atrocities that could neutralize his record as a decorated veteran.

1. Wow. Let 'em try.
The anti-war stuff won't fly. Neither will his UN comment. Kerry has matured since then, and the world has changed. Plus, he's no Michael Dukkakis.

5. The Anti War Message Will Galvanize The Fundies Who Distrust The UN
Don't discount the ignorance and stupidity of these people.

Just look at who they support now for proof of the previous statement.

Realize that 200 to 300 million dollars of Karl Rove focused negative advertising will have a profound affect.

The democrats will not have a similar amount of money to spend.

Big business and the Fundies will not go down without a fight.

This will be the bloodiest and nastiest campaign in American history.

<<<they will probably focus on Kerry's high-profile opposition to the Vietnam War and comments about U.S. atrocities that could neutralize his record as a decorated veteran.>>>

So...what market will this be aimed at, the vast numbers of Americans who are in favor of atrocities???? I don't get it.

11. Exactly
How many vets do you know who think the Vietnam war was a good idea? I can't imagine that protesting against the war after getting a Purple Heart will hurt Kerry in the eyes of veterans.

20. I know several vets
And where they don't believe it was a good war they have a particular sensetivity to the protests that occurred and the way they were treated when they came home (actions envoked by said protests). It's a very touchy subject to say the least.

bush doesn't want American citizens to see. Show that bush and the rows of drapped coffins as his accomplishment...the war president.

25. Bring it on, you jackasses!
What would you do if Hugh Hefner called you a pimp? Or if Michael Jackson called you a wierdo? Is the Bush camp so arrogant, delusional, incompetent, or just plain stupid they can't see how easily Kerry can respond in kind?

Kerry protested a war? He fought in it--and at least he honored his enlistment. All together now--"AAAAAAAAWOLLLLLLLLLL!" And let's not forget about those 500+ dead US soldiers.

26. "If we want to redebate the war on Vietnam in 2004, I'm ready for that"
Inside Politics 2-20

WOODRUFF: They are saying, in effect, you were accusing American troops of war crimes.

KERRY: No, I was accusing American leaders of abandoning the troops. And if you read what I said, it is very clearly an indictment of leadership. I said to the Senate, where is the leadership of our country? And it's the leaders who are responsible, not the soldiers. I never said that. I've always fought for the soldiers. In fact, not only did we oppose the war, but we proudly stood up and fought for the additions to the GI Bill so that vets would be able to use it. We fought for the V.A. Hospitals. I wrote the Agent Orange legislation with Tom Daschle. I helped with the post-Vietnam stress syndrome outreach centers.

I'm proud of the record of fighting for soldiers and for veterans. And the fact is if we want to redebate the war on Vietnam in 2004, I'm ready for that. It was a mistake, and I'm proud of having stood up and shared with America my perceptions of what was happening.
