Laura Bush condemns Democrat 'witch-hunt'
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/02/20/wbush20.xml&sSheet=/portal/2004/02/20/ixportal.html&secureRefresh=true&_requestid=38595

Laura Bush shed her cosy, non-partisan public image to accuse Democratic chiefs of a "witch-hunt" against her husband, President George W Bush, in interviews released yesterday.

Mrs Bush, whose image as a traditional wife and mother has earned her sky-high personal approval ratings, launched a passionate defence of her husband, who has been under withering Democratic fire over unemployment, Iraq and his Vietnam-era military record.

"I think it's a political, you know, witch-hunt, actually, on the part of the Democrats," she said. She directly accused the Democratic party chairman, Terry McAuliffe, of lying when he charged that her husband went absent without leave from the National Guard during his service as a fighter pilot in Texas and Alabama.

"I don't think it's fair to really lie about allegations about someone like the Democratic national chairman did," she said. Checking herself, the former school librarian backed away from the word "lie", saying: "Well, he made it up, I guess I should say."

10. wow
So the White House dumps a stack of inconclusive documents on a Friday afternoon, the "press" loses interest (because they say it's right before the weekend!), so by inferrance the public also loses interest, and now they trot out the First Hausfrau denouncing the whole affair as a "witch hunt"! Very interesting to see how far this goes!

records and start talking about them. I heard someone say today, "They released the records and everyone saw he did his duty."

Nice try but I don't think so! But where is the media? When are they going to give this some serious attention? Have I just missed the ones who are paying attention to this issue?

In Laura's case its the result of many years living with a substance abuser/alcoholic who very likely is also abusive both mentally and physically. The mental and physical abuse follow the substance abuse/alcoholism like day after night.

A good discussion thread would be to discuss how codependent Laura is based on information in "Fortunate Son". We know a lot about Bush's early years married to Laura from this book.

She is the perfect example of the type of woman/wife I never wanted to become and thank god I didn't. We're approximately the same age and I just know she's the type of woman I wouldn't give five minutes of my time if I were in the same room as she was. Dull, vapid, uninteresting - you name it - they all describe her. However, they deserve each other.

Can you imagine that that incident would have been kept quiet by the politicos in Laura's party? Someone might best advise Mrs. Bush to stay away from "witch-hunt" talk. Democrats are not in a charitable mood this election cycle.

"Witch hunt" was Pickles' term, not mine.

"Warlock hunt" would be more gender specific, but I've never heard the term used in this context or any other.

Of course, the term "witch hunt" could also be one to which followers of alternative religions may take exception. "Dictator hunt" or "fascist hunt" would be more accurate, but neither of those are in common usage.

Most accurate would be "people power", a term originating in the Philippines, 1986. It evokes the memory of the restoration of popular government after the fall of crooked dictator who had for some time only a thin veneer of legitimacy based on rigged elections and police state tactics.

People power is what Pickles and the other Bushies really fear.

And why must they always mention her being a librarian, like it ties in with the passive, obedient, traditional woman thing?! Librarians have to deal with negative stereotypes enough without having her as our apparent spokesmodel.

73. Real Librarians are on the front lines against Ashcroft
Defending our right to read whatever we damn well please.

BTW above, "witch hunt" -- term harks back in modern history to Sen. Joe McCarthy's indiscriminate search for communists, commie sympathizers, and anyone who might have worked for social justice or questioned the prevailing Cold War mentality. "Are you now or have you ever been..." became bone-chillingly familiar and ruined many lives. Since more men than women had public working lives, it was mostly male lives and careers that were ruined at that point. Once accused, forever tainted.

"Witch hunt" centuries ago really did relate mostly to females due to the unbelievably misogynistic mind-set of the monks who promulgated it (See Malleus Maleficorum, or The Hammer of Witches, their how-to book). This went on for several centuries, during which at times whole villages would be emptied of every female not in the cradle. Once accused, there was no hope, only excruciating tortures and death.

It's the indiscriminate, unstoppable, guilty-as-charged, tainted-forever nature of certain legal persecutions that get them called witch hunts, not the gender of the accused.

And thanks to Librarians we can read all this history in almost any library in the country. Noble profession.

Hekate

you and the bringing the manslaughter charge to light. I can only imagine the media bandwagon if Hillary had that in her past. Could you imagine a face of the victim to go with that tragedy? Maybe a few interviews. Whoa.

60. speaking of witchhunts...Ken Starr..$$$$$
The Ken Starr witchhunt set loose against the Clintons cost us taxpayers plenty.

The AWOL witchhunt regarding spouse George is bargain basement price-wise. Look how easily the Democrats can creatively save money!!!

Back at you!!!

62. Bitch Please!
"I think it's a political, you know, witch-hunt, actually, on the part of the Democrats," she said.

Were you not paying attention the 8 years WJC was president? Of course it's political, your husband is a f'ing politician!

70. It's political, she says
Of course it's political. This is an election year and it is the tactics created by the Republican party that led to the "political attacks" that we have all come to expect. Fair is fair. When the Republican party can run on their merits rather than on the other candidate's faults (as the Republicans see them) then we can get back to concentrating on the issues. Until then, it's all political.

Besides, the AWOL issue demonstrates a long standing tendency of Bush to lie and deceive. If he can't be honest then he needs to go.

71. Slightly OT: Pickles
How did Laura get the nickname "Pickles"? Is it based on the character of Morey Amsterdam's wife on "The Dick Van Dyke Show"?

72. She was dying to say more. She's a cold, controlled cow. Bush
actually married his mother. He wanted his kids to shape up apparently when they fell off the wagon and she stood between
them and ANY consequences. So she's a hag and a dirt bag and
thinks her kids don't have to pay consequences. SOund familiar?

My mother is a librarian and she HATES Laura the unlovable.

they send out Laura the librarian, to preach politics.

She has no idea of what she speaks and no one really pays attention to what she says because she is so compliant and rather stupid herself. That is because she is has been so princessly lazy over the past thirty years that she has nothing to fall back upon that would establish her as an intelligent, political analyst in her own right. She spent the entire time spoiling her little brats and taking advantage of her husbands' money and family reputation. It was so convenient and comfortable to be "taken care of"

Laura Bush has done nothing and has contributed nothing to this country in all these years except to establish herself as a Stepford, well cared for leech of a wife,
and so now

because she has been so lazy and lacking in energy on any one interest or project or passion, it looks as though she has been "trotted out" and indeed she has been "trotted out" in all her upholstered , Asian eye lifted, botoxed glory.

She now says she likes being "trotted out" as the first lady, although she did not like that initially, Barf and :puke:

and so far has inputted with the enormously intelligent observation that Democrats are in a conspiracy against her husband who told her he did serve honorably in the National Reserves, so therefore, she posits to us, it is true! What is the matter with all of you people--he said he served honorably and showed up and so therfore , it is true. She is just the victim of a vast left wing conspiracy.!!

I suspect that Laura, when she goes to bed at night, and probably lonely and alone as I would suspect that she has little left that is desirable by the chimp, since he did call her a "lump in the bed"

Imagine trying to make love to a person that one perceives, even writes poetry to, as a "lump"? I mean that has got to be a real turn off and probably he cannot get it up when he fixes his gaze upon the plastic, waxed and botoxed little plastic doll he refers to as his "lump in the bed"

She is truly as stupid as the man she married who "begat"
two spoiled little brats and they are all happy to have
begatted" these two little superficial, equally as shallow and as dumb as their parents, tramps who already have disdaine4d the law as being something only the
"little people"need to pay attention to.

Further, Mommy the wrinkled crone of a Bush says she "birthed well", and that means she is setting up a competition here with her "lump of a daughter in law" who only managed to birth two daughters and in circumstances that required intervention on the part of doctors. What shame that she could not birth at least six children normally like Babs the bolific.

So Jenna warned the SS-- that her
daddy would have their ass if anything happened to her. Heh, this is the "entitlement" they believe they deserve without earning a damn thing.

Already the brats have picked up on the bully techinique.

All of the Bush family is patheitic, ignorant, classless and stupid people who happened to know how to milk the system.

78. Pickles: It's not a "witch-hunt." It's called "reality"
Dear Pickles,

I know you think we are just a bunch of meanies, but if you will just read some newspapers and books on your own, and stop listening to the lies of Cheney, Condi, and Rove, you might find that the whole world wants your husband out of the white house for a very good reason:

He's sucking the life out of us!

81. Witches hunt, yes
but again it is the old misdirect. Anyone else want to keep track how many strident women on the GOP gas circuit are taking up this issue? And last and least Pickles troddles out to do her Hillary imitation.

Now that is classic hiding behind women's skirts and a lot of them. Coulter, Charen, Crowles. It is so obviously organized that it a good way to define the spitting order of the female side of the pack.

naturally the men chickenhawks all or mostly, and even those if any who served can't defend Bush too much or attack Kerry directly. The women on the other hand are saying all sorts of things because they can get away with things Jane Fonda never could.

Conspiracy and witch hunt yes, but truthfully defined by them looking into a collective mirror.

So, why do witches burn?
VILLAGER #3:
B--... 'cause they're made of... wood?

Good! Heh heh.
CROWD:
Oh, yeah. Oh.
BEDEVERE:
So, how do we tell whether she is made of wood?
VILLAGER #1:
Build a bridge out of her.
BEDEVERE:
Ah, but can you not also make bridges out of stone?
VILLAGER #1:
Oh, yeah.
RANDOM:
Oh, yeah. True. Uhh...
BEDEVERE:
Does wood sink in water?
VILLAGER #1:
No. No.
VILLAGER #2:
No, it floats! It floats!
VILLAGER #1:
Throw her into the pond!
CROWD:
The pond! Throw her into the pond!
BEDEVERE:
What also floats in water?
VILLAGER #1:
