Evangelicals frustrated by Bush
President Bush left several million evangelical voters "on the table" four years ago and again is having trouble energizing Christian conservatives, prominent leaders on the religious right say.

"It's not just economic conservatives upset by runaway federal spending that he's having trouble with. I think his biggest problem will be social conservatives who are not motivated to work for the ticket and to ensure their fellow Christians get to the polling booth," said Robert H. Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute.

"If there is a rerun of 2000, when an estimated 6 million fewer evangelical Christians voted than in the pivotal year of 1994, then the Bush ticket will be in trouble, especially if there is no Nader alternative to draw Democratic votes away from the Democratic candidate," added Mr. Knight, whose organization is an affiliate of Concerned Women for America (CWA).

Their list of grievances is long, but right now social conservatives are mad over what many consider the president's failure to strongly condemn illegal homosexual "marriages" being performed in San Francisco under the authority of Mayor Gavin Newsom.

1. A plant story to make Bush look "moderate"
I can buy that genuine fiscal conservatives are annoyed with Bush, but I'm not buying that fundamentalistwackos are not motivated. They think he was "chosen" by God, and all that other crap. Not buying it. They will show up to the polls for him. Don't count on any other outcome.

3. You may be overestimating them
I think a lot of the members of the religious right are relatively unsophisticated, politically. (I'm talking about the followers, not the leaders, of course) and they can't understand why Bush hasn't rounded up all the queers, made abortion a capital crime, and staged a show trial for Democrats. Anything short of that makes them feel betrayed.

5. "Chosen by God" is correct
My sister suddenly became one of wackos. She attends lectures where they actually preach that. No lie. God speaks through Bush.

2. Why are you quoting from the Moonie Times?
It's a rightwing source. As the poster above mentioned, it's probably a planted story.

7. It's a clarion call...
the Moonie Times wants Bush to know his fundie base is upset with him not declaring martial law in San Fransisco...really the only option left to him to stop the marriages until the next court date...Not a patient bunch, they want him to do something NOW!

10. Actually, he'll be Rehnquist's replacement
Of course he'll have to vanquish Ashcroft and Pat Robertson first.

12. Bullshit!
Pure unadulterated, unvarnished bullshit! This story is a plant to make the "swing voters" who are uncomfortable with the right-wing fundamentalist loons look a little more favorably at the chimp. He has done NOTHING but pander to both them and all other factions of the right wing.
