Al-Sistani sets terms for Iraq election delay: interview

Iraq’s influential Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani, set out possible terms for delaying Iraqi elections in a rare German magazine interview on Thursday.

US officials say they have an open mind on the coming United Nations proposals, but still prefer a caucus system which al-Sistani rejects.

In what Der Spiegel termed a veiled threat of an Iraqi intifada, al-Sistani said: “It cannot take too long ... the people know what they have to do.”

Al-Sistani has refused to meet with US officials in Iraq including top American administrator Paul Bremer.
