Taleban announces Swat Ceasefire
Source: BBC

Taleban fighters in north-west Pakistan's restive Swat valley have announced a 10-day ceasefire.

The move came after local officials signed a deal with a militant leader to enforce Islamic law in the district.

The ceasefire halts fighting between Pakistani security forces and Taleban militants in Swat that has raged since November 2007.

Once one of Pakistan's most popular holiday destinations, the Swat valley is now mostly under Taleban control.

1. No it is not positive - it's a repressive Taliban regime
The Taleban have set up their own system of Islamic justice, as they understand it, and have closed down schools, denying education to tens of thousands of children ...

2. I understand what the Taleban represents and does, I was trying to figure out why they'd do a cease
fire? I was wondering if they are doing it to draw the opposing troops closer, to attack them, or to get the US to attack them and the non-Taleban just to flare up the flames...

12. it's a good thing they close down...
those schools. Keep those kids safe from bombs. You did know the U.S. began negotiating with the Taliban a while back? Apparently the people of Afghanistan feel safe with the Taliban. I guess that's what happens when you live in a country that has been at war for decades.

7. Pakistan will have to trade land for...Cease fire
sound familiar?

Pakistan to end military operation and
implement sharia in Malakand Division

snip
The military has failed to defeat Faqir's forces despite waging a brutal military operation that began in July 2008. Bajaur is a stronghold for the TNSM and serves as a major hub for al Qaeda and Taliban operations in eastern Afghanistan. The joint al Qaeda and Taliban Shadow Army has conducted operations alongside Faqir and Fazlullah's forces in Bajaur and Swat.

The peace agreement will ease the pressure on the Taliban in Bajaur, provide a safe haven neighboring areas, and allow the Taliban and allied extremist to concentrate forces in the tribal agency.

8. We'll just send drones to bomb them while their defenses are down
why doesn't the US ever offer a ceasefire? Embarassing that the ostensible "bad guys" look more moderate than the US.

"Pakistan" imposes Islamic law in Taliban stronghold

"This is definitely a surrender," said Khadim Hussain of the Aryana Institute for Regional Research and Advocacy, a thinktank in Islamabad. "If you keep treating a community as something different from the rest of the country, it will isolate them."

Javed Iqbal, a retired judge, speaking on Pakistani television, said: "It means that there is not one law in the country. It will disintegrate this way. If you concede to this, you will go on conceding."...
