Thousands Of Weapons Unaccounted For, GAO Report Finds; Defense Says It Needs More People To Keep Inventory

(CBS/AP) An independent study finds that the U.S. has been shoveling weapons into the hands of Afghan troops but can't ensure they don't wind up in the hands of Taliban fighters.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press, comes as Kabul recovers from attacks by heavily armed militants that killed 20 people and wounded 57 others. The Taliban have claimed responsibility.

A Taliban commander named Qari Talah, who claims his group is operating inside Kabul, told CBS News' Sami Yousafzai Wednesday via telephone, "seven brave members attacked in many places in Kabul and it was revenge for the indiscriminate killing of the Taliban prisoners in Kabul prison last month."

Talha said he was in command of 60 militants in central Kabul and that his brigade was planning a more "stunning attack." He claimed his militants were "now easily operating in Kabul, and our influence and control reach to the suburbs."

1. Lost track of? Like they "Fell off a truck" lost track of?

When I was driving cab I had one trooper tell me that someone in his platoon, supply dept of course, was actually busted for selling weapons to the Taliban. Said the corruption is about as bad as you'd expect it to be.

It would be shocking if US weapons weren't being used to kill Americans. How does it make you feel that America is the biggest purveyor of death on the planet.

3. rfids on them would have helped

more than on walmart pallettes, don't tell me about it giving away our military's positions because they'd pry it off for themselves. I still like the idea of rfids on dog tags with a light to show green or red, maybe it would reduce 'friendly fire' incidents.
