Defying US, Japan signs $2 billion oil deal with Iran

Japan has signed an estimated two billion dollar deal to exploit Iran's Azadegan oil field, despite opposition from the United States over Tehran's nuclear program.

A Japanese consortium backed by the government negotiated the deal with Iran as the resource-poor nation depends on imports to supply over 80 percent of its energy needs.

Tokyo will finance 75 percent of the project, which is estimated to have 26 billion barrels of crude oil reserves.

Under the deal, Inpex Corporation, Japan Petroleum Exploration Company and Tomen Corporation are to develop the southern half of Azadegan, producing some 50,000 barrels of crude oil per day by the summer of 2007 and then increase the amount.

1. How dare they defy the imperial commander in chimp.
Don't they know only the US under chimpy is allowed to do the defying?

Maybe it was a secret pact they made with chimpy in exchange for the humanitarian troops.

From December 19th:

55.ÊI got it now

Malta and Libya are finally getting together on exploiting the areas of the continental shelf between them -- used to be they shot at each other when someone starter drilling there. Gotta get all this to market -- but the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act (ILSA) makes that impossible.

But wait! Japan wants to work with Iran to develop the Azadegan oil field, a little less than 3 billion barrels' worth. Once again, ILSA getting in the way, since the US might sanction Japan.

Wait, did I actually say "the US might sanction Japan"? Sorry.

It's all a money game, folks. Look for the ILSA to drop faster than the Constitution.

7. another article
Alexanders Gas and Oil:

26-01-04 Japanese companies are involved in talks with senior officials of the Iraqi Oil Ministry to secure contracts over oil and gas fields in Iraq. The negotiations expose the Koizumi government's claim that it is only sending troops and financial aid to assist the US occupation to address the humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people.

6. Oh God, another sign that the world is nearly running out of oil,
when the U S's strongest ally goes against the wishes of our imperial leaders. They own Billions of U S treausry bonds, it could get mighty ugly in the markets and with the dollar if they sold.

Our levarage against them is pretty low, of course Bush could always put them on his axis of evil.

This is not a good thing.
