Judge Denies Electronic Voting Challenge/ Bev Harris a Conspiracy Theorist
AP Wire

February 18, 2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A Superior Court judge rejected a legal challenge Wednesday to California's March 2 primary over allegations that new electronic voting systems are vulnerable to hackers.

Judge Raymond Cadei denied a temporary restraining order sought against electronic voter machine maker Diebold Election Systems, Inc., saying there isn't enough evidence of security threats to justify interfering in an election just 13 days away.

A group of computer programmers and California voters alleged that new electronic touch-screen voting machines being used in at least 14 counties on March 2 are insecure and could be manipulated to disrupt election results. Legal challengers included Sacramento computer consultant Jim March and Washington state resident Bev Harris, who has written extensively on possible security glitches in new electronic voting systems.

<snip>

Diebold attorney Daniel D. McMillan called the challenge a "waste of public resources" brought on by publicity-seeking "conspiracy theorists."

This McMillan guy sounds like a real piece of work. Excuse me, a waste of public resources? How dare anyone question the validity of their bogus machines. Oh that's right we're all just a bunch of crack pots. Hang in their Bev & Co., these guys just continue to prove on a daily basis what a bunch of slimballs they really are.

14. Just wait...some geek will turn an election upside down.
That'll happen sooner than later. Let's just hope the press reports it. Some nerd will rig it so that Mister Rogers gets all the votes or something. Just because he can.

16. That is the solution...
If a computer hacker were able to rig Diebold's machines so that the 'fix' is totally obvious, like electing Buggs Bunny, then the problem would go away.

18. This is not a one party issue.
The repugnants are not the monsters here.

7. That's why we need to bring our own paper ballots...
Citizens For Legitimate Government Launches B.Y.O.B., Bring Your Own (paper) Ballot, Campaign for "Election" 2004 ( press release from www.legitgov.org)

CLG Founder and Honorary Chair, Michael D. Rectenwald, announced the CLG's inauguration of the B.Y.O.B., Bring Your Own (paper) Ballot, campaign. The group calls for voters in the 2004 presidential contest to print, fill-out, and notarize their own copy of the CLG paper ballot receipt, as a safeguard against known flaws and vulnerabilities of touch-screen voting and the recent history of discarding votes and overthrowing election results.

11. NOT! - they get put into the Diebold machines too
Maybe they might keep the ballots somewhere afterwards, but if they're following the normal modus operandus of a vote fixer, they'll destroy the ballots after they're entered into the Diebold machines, for "privacy reasons".

15. A receipt would be totally useless
Th emachine could be programmed to print out what the voter selected, but record for counting whomever it has been programmed to give the election to.

Just remember one thing, the election officials generally program the machine, so what is to stop a democrat from rigging an election ?

20. This Is What Freeps Need To Hear. If The Machines Are Vulnerable
to hacking then they are vulnerable to hacking by democrats & republicans alike. The freeps should be jumping on the bandwagon here too.. they are always crying "voter fraud" (although it's usually when too many non-whites get to vote..) we should get them involved in the black box voting fight.

21. A receipt is NOT useless.
The purpose of a receipt is not for "proof of purchase", but instead to provide an auditable verification that the votes were indeed accurately registered. The idea is not to take it home with you, but to drop it off (after checking it) at the voting place before you leave. That way, if the result is challenged, there is a means for a physical recount.

Sounds reasonable, no?
