Drug Czar: Tide Turning in Drug War
(Sorry about the source...this article just had the best quotes and info.)

WASHINGTON — America is achieving historic successes in the war on drugs, and some high-tech gadgets may be helping to turn the tide, John P. Walters (search), the nation's drug czar, said on Wednesday.

"We've had use go down by 11 percent by teenagers over the last two years. We haven't seen that happen in 10 years — 400,000 less kids are using drugs in 2003 than in 2001," Walters told an audience attending a counter-drug technology exhibit in Washington, D.C.

Walters, whose official title is director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (search), demonstrated some of the technology contributing to this success. Mini-buster contraband detectors, night vision kits and wiretap systems were among several items on display at the exhibit.

Police officers use the mini-buster, which is about the size of a chalkboard eraser, to find hidden drugs, money and other contraband tucked away in false compartments in cars, suitcases and other sealed areas. The technology is similar to that of a stud-finder, which detects density changes in walls.

Another tool is a drugwipe, which a police officer uses to wipe a surface to detect traces of marijuana, cocaine, opiates or amphetamines. If the drugs are present, the swab changes color.

19. John P. Walters= Crack smoker
He obviously took a couple of BIG rips from his glass deke prior to issuing that statement.

In Wisconsin, we have 7,500 drug dealers "FARMED OUT" to neighboring states and the CCA (Corrections Corporation of Amerika)

There is a fiscal CRISIS in Wisconsin because we are spending more on CORRECTIONS than on the entire University of Wisconsin system (21 campuses) combined

7. Watch for this to be a MAJOR part of *'s campaign... we are
finally winning the war on some drugs!

Yeeeehaaaaw.

I wonder where they got these latest lies from. total BS... drugs are coming back in practically every neighborhood, violent crime is on the rise, and will get worse again.

and all the money in the world won't stop the major supplier of drugs to this country, the Intelligence Community from bringing in the product they bought cheap for information, and can sell high to fund their black bag ops.

Who do these idiots think they are fooling?

First check out how these Repubs read from the same script:

"Four hundred thousand young people are not using drugs today because of that decline," said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson. (12/19/03)

Drug use peaked in 1979 and has been stable since the mid 90s.

The NHSDA numbers for 1999: 6.3%
2000: 6.3%
2001: 7.1%

Note the big increase in Bush's first year. Much of this increase is crystal meth and Oxy use.

85% of this "illicit" drug use is cannabis use. 80% of cannabis users do not use any other drug.
Exclude cannabis and only 1% use all other illegal drugs combined.
But surely those handi-wipes to wipe your kids room for drug residue is the answer to America's problems!

What blather. Opium production at all time high in Afghanistan. Same deal for cocaine in Columbia. Why? Demand is also at an all time high.

13. And when did false compartments become illegal?
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 10:22 PM by BiggJawn
I know it's illegal to have a hidey-hole in your vehicle in Illinois, but anywhere else?
Oh, sure, the old "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear" rationale again...

Yeah, winning the "war" on drugs, but losing the war for civil rights. And people don't give a shit, so long as they're "safe" and have mass consumables to consume, and Tee-Vee to titilate (pun intended) the eyeballs.

15. I can't speak for the accuracy of his stats
What I do know is this: the price of commercial-grade marijuana in Minnesota has been holding steady at $100/ounce for the past 8 years. Whatever "progress" the DEA jackboots have made hasn't been enough to cause a price hike.

18. yea the tide is turning
The treasury is bankrupt, drugs use (pain killers) is epidemic in america, and the war is a giant case of public funded denial. The real stats show that drugs use hasn't changed.

They are not capable of anything but following a non-working blueprint to criminalize americans and to disenfranchise drugs users from their civil rights.

I hope the terrorists get the DEA next time they're blowing people up... at least hit at the real evil in american government. Those evil people preside over destroying more lives than any military man can say. They are war criminals, on FAUX-war crimes network.

but they don't care -- the Prison Industrial Complex is now firmly established.

edit: I wonder which of the remaining democratic presidential candidates are willing to end this attack on American families.

22. what's the free market show? crank, coke, and weed prices are stable
btw, smack is cheaper than it was 5 years ago, thanks to the reinvigoration of the afghani poppy crops

and with production of these at an all time highs (hehe), the only way prices are stable is that demand is stable, otherwise a decrease in demand would lead to a drop in prices

so either those kids are lying (gee, i find a kid lying about using drugs so unbelievable!), or adults are using the stuff as much more than kids aren't anymore, so there remains a constant demand for these things, not a decrease.

of all the things that the republicans have lied about over time, it is the drug war most of all.

24. drug stats
so either those kids are lying ...

The kids are lying. My senior high school class was one of the groups used for the national drug stats. The questionaire that was handed to us had a tracking number that led to your name. The kids in my class complained about it to the teacher, and when the teacher realized her class was correct, she implied that she wouldn't blame anyone if they lied.

I know I lied about marijuana use. That was 1995.
