GOP Fears Kentucky Will Be Next Loss
CHARLES BABINGTON | February 4, 2009 07:30 AM EST

WASHINGTON — The stars keep aligning in Senate Democrats' favor, boosting their hopes of winning a supermajority in the next election while Republicans wonder what else will go wrong.

Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, picked by President Barack Obama on Tuesday for Commerce secretary, is the fifth GOP senator to abandon re-election plans next year in a competitive state. The retirements give Democrats hope of picking up seats that may have been beyond their reach otherwise.

Meanwhile, Republicans are deeply worried about their re-election prospects in Kentucky and are nervously eying several other incumbents on the 2010 ballot.

Democrats, who were in the Senate minority only three years ago, now see a chance to push their majority above 60 in the 100-member chamber. That's a crucial number because it would allow them to cut off Republican filibusters and control Senate actions with minimal GOP interference.

2. For Democrats it all depends on where the economy is by the fall of '10
If things are looking better then Dems can make gains. If they are the same or worse then the GOP will capitalize on it. In this country memories are short. Yes, the mess we are in is Bush's fault, but by 11/10 voters will blame the in-party or reward them if things are better.

11. The mess we are in is not Bush*'s fault, it is Republican's fault
If we keep placing all the blame on just Bush* then Republicans get off Scott Free and we all know this has been going on far longer than Bush*'s term. It was entirely Republican's doing and Bush* was chief Cheerleader but it certainly was not all his fault..

3. You also lose members...
...when the average age of your constituancy, Members, and Politicians are over 70. They retire or die. It's an 'Old' party, literally. Old ideas, Old values, resistant to change as old people are. The yound ones are trust fund babies hoping to pay NO taxes for doing nothing for their money. Basically.

4. If Obama and the Dems can provide them with jobs, improve standard of living, and look good doing it
It can be done permanently.

Not that is an easy task.

5. If only they'd sent Mitch McConnell packing.
NPR has been subjecting me to opinions from the Chinless Wonder at every morning newsbreak for the past few days. I wasn't fond of Frist back in the day, but McConnell's no improvement.

7. Ha ha, keep it up Republicans, keep crying out for your endless
tax cuts, because that among other policies worked so well for the average American. I hope you all lose your shirt in the next election cycle.
