Mrs. Bush Is 'Library Lady' for the Day
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- When first lady Laura Bush, a former librarian, read aloud to children here Wednesday, she picked an appropriate book: "Tomas and the Library Lady," a story about a Texas migrant boy whose trip to a library opens his eyes to the world of books.

"I hope that everybody is practicing reading at home," Mrs. Bush said after reading the true story by Texas author Pat Mora about Tomas Rivera, who grew up to become chancellor of the University of California-Riverside. "Look what happened because he read all those books."

A crowd, some seated on the library carpet, greeted Mrs. Bush when she arrived at Rancho Mirage Public Library. Former first lady Betty Ford invited Mrs. Bush to this southern California city, which is home to the alcohol and drug clinic founded by Mrs. Ford. Neither she nor former President Ford attended.

"I hope that everybody is practicing reading at home," Mrs. Bush said, urging the children to spend more time reading than watching television. "Reading takes practice. Reading is really great exercise for your brain."

8. right, they are molding her
into a stump speech giver. The two brats are also being considered as campaign stumpers. I find that funny.

Laura the vacant. The joker smiling botoxed Stepford Snow White princess who beds with the beast, and the two little entitled lawbreakers, stumping for George the war president.

That reeks of desperation, especially since Kerry introduced his two daughters to the crowd.

She says she would like to go to Afganistan. I would say it is about time honey. You took such an interest that you saw fit to get the big corporations to donate, of all things, goddam sewing machines to the women so they could sew their daughters a school uniform . And you, the frump, sent them the pattern for this uniform and it was --UGLY--really, really ugly and an insult to those young girls. Tell me Laura would Jenna and Barbara who spend ten thousand dollars in one day at a fashion show on their own clothes wear this kind of crap?

Why do you want to go there? You did not see fit to go there before. Now that HIllary has gone to a war zone, you suddenly decide that you want to go to one too! YOu ain't no HIllary, Laura and stop trying to be one.

Well, we ain't paying for it, Laura. You can use your own goddam money to go to a war zone for your photo op.

10. Marianne, I gotta hand it to ya'.
By far, you write the best posts on Pickles at DU. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. And, you say plenty about this forgettable, frumpy First Lady-Usurper!

And, you never cease to make me chuckle just a little bit, too. :D

12. Is little Tomas from one of the TX colonias? argh!
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 10:29 PM by Angel_O_Peace
During Bush's time as governor, he ignored one of the largest problems and populations in Texas.

How callous and disgusting that Laura would choose a story about a little Hispanic boy who had never seen a library. Probably none of the real children from the colonias have ever had the pleasure of having a Library Lady share the wealth and power of words with them either. :grr:
(wish there were an html smilie for an angry angel!)

The Real Bush Record with Texas Hispanics
<snip>
Fact #3: Bush has never visited a single colonia. In his acceptance speech, Governor Bush did not mention colonias--sprawling shanytowns along the border that lack basic services such as water, sewer, and electricity. There are about 1500 colonias from El Paso to Brownsville, with about 400,000 residents, mostly Hispanic. These Texans live in third world conditions, with the highest unemployment, poverty and drop-out rates in the country, as well as a much higher incidence of diseases like hepatitis A and tuberculosis. The Governor has refused numerous invitations to visit the colonias to see these conditions firsthand. He can go to Bob Jones University, but he can’t find time to visit colonias in his own back yard.
