Replacement hopefuls join recall victory rally

Sacramento -- Jack Kemp is out, Green-turned-Democrat Audie Bock is in, and Republicans Bill Simon and Tom McClintock are all but certain to join the Oct. 7 recall battle to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.
"I can't imagine any circumstances that would prevent me from filing" to run for governor, McClintock, a state senator from Thousand Oaks, said at a boisterous, pro-recall rally outside the state Capitol on Saturday. "And I've got a very vivid imagination."
Simon, who lost to Davis in November, played coy with reporters, saying he wasn't making any announcement because "this is about the recall today, not any one candidate." But a booth on the Capitol lawn featured recycled "Simon for Governor" bumper strips from last year's campaign and new "Bill Simon for Governor 2003" buttons.
When it came time to speak to the more than 1,000 people looking to oust Davis, Simon was more direct, making promises about "when I'm governor in 2006 -- or maybe 2003."
