San Francisco Chronicle (Sunday): Replacement hopefuls join recall rally
From sfgate, the website of the San Francisco Chronicle
Dated Sunday July 27

Replacement hopefuls join recall victory rally
By John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writer

Sacramento -- Jack Kemp is out, Green-turned-Democrat Audie Bock is in, and Republicans Bill Simon and Tom McClintock are all but certain to join the Oct. 7 recall battle to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.

"I can't imagine any circumstances that would prevent me from filing" to run for governor, McClintock, a state senator from Thousand Oaks, said at a boisterous, pro-recall rally outside the state Capitol on Saturday. "And I've got a very vivid imagination."

Simon, who lost to Davis in November, played coy with reporters, saying he wasn't making any announcement because "this is about the recall today, not any one candidate." But a booth on the Capitol lawn featured recycled "Simon for Governor" bumper strips from last year's campaign and new "Bill Simon for Governor 2003" buttons.

When it came time to speak to the more than 1,000 people looking to oust Davis, Simon was more direct, making promises about "when I'm governor in 2006 -- or maybe 2003."

2. The issue at stake is our system of representation in California.
The attack is on the election system. The social agreement is that we vote every so many years. This recall seeks to undo that and replace it with anarchy. Let's start calling the repugs "anarchists," for that is what they are.

3. I can only hope
that many of the people who initially supported this will start to have second thoughts and realize what a mess this will be if someone like Issa gets selected.

Does CA need more chaos?
Does CA need long drawn out court battles?
Does CA need more divisiveness?
Does CA need to be the laughing stock of the Nation?
