Laura Bush Says Gay Marriage "Shocking"
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Laura Bush says gay marriages are "a very, very shocking issue" for some people, a subject that should be debated by Americans rather than settled by a Massachusetts court or the mayor of San Francisco.

Asked how she feels about the issue personally, Mrs. Bush replies: "Let's just leave it at that."

In an Associated Press interview, Mrs. Bush also endorsed sexual abstinence programs for teens, which are slated to get double their current funding under the president's latest budget proposal.

Abstinence should be extensively discussed alongside contraception, she said. "We know it works. It's 100 percent fail-safe."

(snip)

On another political subject, asked whether the president's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, will ever run for president, she replied, "I doubt it, but I have no idea."

Mrs. Bush said she and the president have been feeling a bit "nostalgic" as they watch the Democratic candidates campaigning in the snows of New Hampshire and Iowa.

"That's a much more upclose and personal campaign because you get to actually be with so many of the voters," she said. "We both miss that."

1. If she think's that's shocking...
...she should take a look at what her husband has been doing to the children of Iraq and Afghanistan. But of course, she'd never sully her Beautiful Mind with those images...

Just take another Xanax, Laura. It will all be over soon, and you'll be back in Crawford.

81. Laura "Library Lady" is shocking...and callous and disgusting
How dare she speak out at all about gay marriage, or any issues, when she has shown such grave disregard for human diginity and welfare.

From the post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=372204

Mrs. Bush Is 'Library Lady' for the Day

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- When first lady Laura Bush, a former librarian, read aloud to children here Wednesday, she picked an appropriate book: "Tomas and the Library Lady," a story about a Texas migrant boy whose trip to a library opens his eyes to the world of books.

http://www.newsday.com/news/politics/wire/sns-ap-laura-bush-reading,0,815606.story?coll=sns-ap-politics-headlines

While First Lady of TX, this is what was going on:

The Real Bush Record with Texas Hispanics
<snip>
Fact #3: Bush has never visited a single colonia. In his acceptance speech, Governor Bush did not mention colonias--sprawling shanytowns along the border that lack basic services such as water, sewer, and electricity. There are about 1500 colonias from El Paso to Brownsville, with about 400,000 residents, mostly Hispanic. These Texans live in third world conditions, with the highest unemployment, poverty and drop-out rates in the country, as well as a much higher incidence of diseases like hepatitis A and tuberculosis. The Governor has refused numerous invitations to visit the colonias to see these conditions firsthand. He can go to Bob Jones University, but he can’t find time to visit colonias in his own back yard.

What a hypocritical and insensitive piece of garbage is Laura Bush.

Okay, *that* was parody, right?

Not bad at all ... it being meant as parody of what men say about women, and not as a straight (forgive me) ad personam comment.

I'm just not sure, from a response or two, that the entire audience understood it as such.

67. and some people are shocked by women holding jobs
So where should society draw the line?

Where what its members are being "shocked" about ceases to be any of their business.

Oh, the facile answer. Some questions just call for it.

But yeah, sure, it isn't always easy to determine where the line oughta be drawn.

So, you got some ideas? What is it that makes marriage between people of the same sex someone else's business?

It's really a pretty simple question. And it's a decent enough summary of the questions that get asked -- and must get asked -- whenever someone is denied the equal protection of the law, and due process.

Writ even smaller, it goes: what is the justification for violating those rights?

Got justification?

Or maybe you were just saying it's okay for people to be shocked by things. Well of course it is. I'm shocked at the state of my kitchen, and I'm sure you would be too, and I wouldn't say you shouldn't be. I just don't think I'll be trying to pass a law to criminalize my housekeeping practices though ... and I sure hope you won't be.

this shallow woman is invented. I am so tired of this reinvention. She is a damn robot. I think she swallows the tape before she goes out for her photo ops.

Meanwhile her two spoiled brats break the law, spend ten thousand apiece at a fashion show on their clothes and hang out with playboys who have a record.

I read something on another forum,in Salon, and this is the piece that was written about this lazy , leech of a spongy, equally as stupid as her husband, woman , in the LA times. you need to regester and pay for this article but I will link to the thread in Salon, where some poster posted the article in it's entirety

This is so disgusting. NONE of the these people have any shame at all. All of a sudden, Laura Bush is to be lauded as a what? What the hell for? She is being invented, made into an urban legend, complete with her helmet, perhaps wigged, hair, eye lifts that went awry making her look crosseyed, rictus joker smile and botoxed face.

Some of the disgusting article from the poster in Salon

<snip>

Three years ago, when George W. Bush took office, fashionistas pilloried Laura Bush for her simple look, described by one stylist as "so Doris Day." Now, she commands their attention in a red Oscar de la Renta suit with gold buttons and black slingback heels.

Her sartorial makeover is a metaphor for a new political reality. After three years in the shadows, Laura Bush is emerging as a presence in the political and policy life of the Bush administration. More popular than the president — a Fox News poll taken last year found her favorable rating at 73%, about 30 points higher than her husband's recent showing in the polls — Laura Bush will be much more visible as she plans to stump for her husband's reelection.

Already, she has raised more than $5 million for the Bush-Cheney campaign, and has three fundraisers planned for Southern California this week — in Newport Beach, Palm Springs and Los Angeles.
With the role of political wives undergoing renewed media and public scrutiny, the White House is eager to showcase Laura Bush, and she seems only too happy to comply. A champion of education for girls in Afghanistan, the first lady hopes to travel to Kabul this year — a mission to a war zone, something few other first ladies have requested.

By reputation, Laura Bush is a woman who sublimated her career ambitions and her politics to those of her husband. While clearly no Hillary Clinton, who carved out a policy role in what she viewed as a co-presidency, Laura Bush has been quietly influential in the causes she espouses — education,

This woman should not be allowed to get away with this act. She is raking in millions for her serial killer husband. Someone needs to take her to task--She is banal, stupid, frumpy and controlled and is full of shit.

Pic of our first lady in her "seal clap" This clap was most noticeable as she stood in the gallery and appluded her serial killer husband when he gave his sneering state of the union address. Man, she sure did look like a goddam seal--it was quite noticeable. Way out arms and flexible wrists--arf arf--

Her table got bumped for Laura so my sister turned to the Maitre'D and said "I loathe her husband". HE replied so do I. The couple behind her said their kids would barf if they knew their parents were in the same restuarant.

She said that was the general tone of allmost everyone in the restuarant. This is the heart of Westside liberal L.A. so it's not surprising.

43. Why didn't they simply turn Pickles away?
If they didn't have a table...well, they shouldn't have bumped somebody else like your sister just to accomodate Pickles!

48. L.A. restuarants fo this all the time for celebrities unfortunately.
Also, the Maitre'D is not the owner and probably didn't want to risk the consequences. It would have been great if he's turned her away though.

56. that is an excellent idea
change the vocabulary. I agree one hundred percent.

Actually, this issue is not on the top of my list. I find the deaths of thousands of people, women, old women, old men, children and babies all killed on a lie to be more pressing than this.

I really do not care a whit about it. If it is legal, that's fine with me. Go on. I am more conerned with the insanity and the idiot in the white house than I am with marriages of anyone.

I do not buy into the marriage is a sacred, god given, thing between a man and a woman--that to me is a Christian interpretation. I am not a Christian and would never ever fall back on that discipline again for the rest of my life.

We live here, we die here. We do the best we can to not harm others. Religion, imo, gets in the way of doing that.

If polygamy were allowed, entire neighborhoods would marry each other for the health insurance coverage alone. It would bankrupt most HMOs.

85. That's clever; I hadn't thought of that
My primary concern with polygamy has to do with the fact that marriage is not only a loving covenant between two people, but also a business partnership. Fairly solving a standard two-party divorce is difficult enough. The legalities regarding a polygamous divorce would be awful.

60. Re: abstinence funding
Once again, the Bush/Repub machine is lying and /or totally misinformed.

From the CDC web site:

"The teen pregnancy rate had risen from the mid-1980's and reached a peak in 1991; the 1997 rate is actually 10 percent lower than the 1986 rate when the upturn began.

Teenage pregnancy rates declined for all teenagers with the steepest declines among non-Hispanic black (down 23 percent) and white (down 26 percent) teenagers. The overall decline is attributable to both reduced rates of live births (down 13 percent) and abortions (down 32 percent). Teen birth rates are available through 1999 and show a continued decline, totaling 20 percent since 1991.

Among the factors believed to be driving this downturn in teen pregnancies are increases in condom use, the adoption of the effective injectable and implant contraceptives, and the leveling off of teen sexual activity."

Now who was president in the 1980s? The 1990s?

62. She's a terrible First Lady
She's nothing more than a Stepford Wife with slightly more sophistication than Nancy Reagan. Barbara Bush was a better First Lady.

As long as she stays out of politics I'll refrain from criticizing her, but when she makes stupid remarks like this, she's fair game.

73. Why did she not offer her personal opinion?
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 09:47 PM by varun
http://www.salon.com/news/wire/2004/02/18/laura/index.html

"...Laura Bush says gay marriages are ‘‘a very, very shocking issue" for some people, a subject that should be debated by Americans rather than settled by a Massachusetts court or the mayor of San Francisco.

Asked how she feels about the issue personally, Mrs. Bush replies: ‘‘Let's just leave it at that."....

-------------------------------------------------------------

She said that other people were shocked...but did not talk about her personal opinions...

Why?

79. Please...No More Precious Laura Posts...
I`m gagging. What is she thinking? That everyone inhabits Cheerful Village, a swell place where all young girls and boys are enthusiastic about abstinence?

Glad she felt nostalgic about New Hampshire and that up close and personal campaign. Does that mean she`ll stop acting like a plastic garden gnome and start mingling with the regular folks so anxious to tell her husband about the job they just lost or their dead son in Iraq?
