Bush abortion smear as mud flies
Phillip Coorey
19feb04
PRESIDENT Bush faced an extraordinary claim last night that he once paid for a girlfriend's abortion.

<snip>While Mr Bush and Senator Kerry have so far steered clear of personal attacks, their unofficial supporters are stooping deep into the gutter.

<snip>Now paralysed porn king Larry Flynt is preparing to publish equally dubious claims that the pro-life Mr Bush once made a girlfriend have an abortion.

<snip>Now Flynt, whose last political foray was a hamfisted run for Californian governor, plans to publish the abortion as fact in an upcoming book.

"I got the story nailed," he said. "I've talked to the woman's friends, I've tracked down the doctor who did the abortion, I tracked down the Bush people who arranged for the abortion."
The trouble for Senator Kerry is the Republicans, who have their backs to the wall at the moment, seize on such material as sanctioned mud-slinging by the Kerry camp. <snip>

14. when it comes to outing right-wing fundie hypocrites ...
As I understand it, Flynt *does* have considerable credibility.

Flynt actually made these allegations about Bush *before* the 2000 US election. However, his informant would not go public, although I believe he had originally understood she would, and he apparently always adheres to a policy of not outing his informants without their consent, so he did not pursue it.

As an outsider, I'm not perfectly familiar with the personages, but hasn't he succeeded with a couple of them?

Quick google ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Flynt

During the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton in 1998, he offered a million dollars for evidence about sexual affairs of Republican lawmakers. He published a magazine about the results; his investigations eventually lead to the resignation of incoming House speaker Bob Livingston. He also accused Bob Barr of having committed perjury when testifying about his wife's abortion.

Livingston wasn't the only one as I recall ... there was a woman legislator he outed as a lying hypocrite as well I think; can't remember the name. Barr denies:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Clinton_in_crisis/Story/0,2763,209179,00.html

Mr Flynt accused him of hypocrisy. At a
Beverly Hills press conference, the
publisher of Hustler magazine produced
an affidavit signed by Gail Barr, the
congressman's ex-wife.

She claimed he had condoned and paid
$300 for an abortion in 1983. She also
claimed that he drove her to the clinic and
looked after their two children while the
operation was performed.

Mr Flynt contrasted this with Mr Barr's
statement at the couple's divorce
proceedings three years later, when he
said under oath that he had opposed the
abortion. In her statement, Ms Barr also
accused Mr Barr of having an affair with
Jerilyn Dobbin while he was still married
to Ms Barr. Mr Barr married Ms Dobbin a
month after the divorce. At the divorce
hearings, he refused to answer questions
about his alleged adultery.

Flynt's a disgusting human being, but there ya go.

And the GOP House leadership moved from Gingrich to Livingston to Hastert as they eliminated lying adulterers one by one.

53. I know her...
In her first campaign for congress, she loved to wear a t-shirt that said "Earth First! We'll log the other planets later!" to informal events like loggers' festivals.

I will say one positive thing about ol' Helen: Remember when term limits was the big mantra among Republicans? Mainly because they saw it as the only way to run off Democratic majorities? (This before Lee Atwater taught them to campaign.) And then they lost their enthusiasm for term limits when they took the majority in both houses? Helen Chenoweth term-limited herself. Served in Congress, then said "I promised to leave, so I'm not running this time." I don't think it was the adultery that did it, because she had the magic (R). In Idaho they have yellow-dog Republicans.

I think it was then. Or was it when Lott stepped down? Either way, I recall Flynt making these grandiose claims that he was going to expose dozens of Congressmen (both parties, but mostly Repugs) for their illicit affairs, sex lives etc. Nothing happened. But I believe this one to be true. I believe any smarmy thing I heard about shrub's personal life. It's all so befitting.

while AWOL's aborted lovechild accusation is clearly NOT coming from Kerry's camp. Flynt would have come out with this story this year no matter what.

I think Flynt must have some hard evidence.. unlike Drudge. He sure made Newt Gingrich look like a fool for the affairs he had (and ignored while going after president Clinton for the same "crime").

and the right wingers will forgive him. You can bet that he would encourage his daughters to have an abortion rather than go full term if they got pregnant w/o being married. Wonder if they use birth control? Hmmmm

I'm not taking on the girls...was just a question that popped into my mind and stating how hypocritical you can all but assume he would be in this situation.

This isn't enough, unless there's something way bad that Flynt uncovered, to do any thing other than keep people's tongues wagging, unfortunately :(

I spoke with Larry Flynt's people last election (2000) about this story. At the time, he had hired PI's to get proof of the story. But the woman denied it and Flynt did not have enough independent proof to publish it. I guess he does now since he's going to publish it in a book.

32. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Welcome, WillW! You're absolutely correct. It's all fair game. If THEY wanna play rough, so be it. We did NOT start this. We didn't even start THIS. Kerry and Edwards and the rest of 'em can take the high road while underlings and other folks on the outskirts can do the dirty work and get the goods out there. The republi-CONS have been doing dirty tricks and smear jobs and character assassinations for YEARS. DECADES. They wrote the book. So for them to go "crying in their teacups" about how awful it is do stoop to such depths, boo-hoo. Tough shit. They made this bed. It's their turn to lie down on it.

Your point is excellent - as long as they keep having to put out these fires, it keeps them off their game. They CAN'T focus on offense if they're forced to play defense all the time. We need to KEEP KKKarl Rove and his friends so busy putting out fires that they can't launch any molotov cocktails of their own.

Playing dirty? Yep. Lowering ourselves? Okay, fine, be that way. Somebody else can take the high road and watch themselves just get run over - AGAIN - by these people. I want to win. When we own the game board again, THEN we can change the rules.

And when Scott McClellan or some other talking head for the republi-CONS whines about how awful this is, WE NEED TO HAVE OUR PEOPLE SMACK 'EM UPSIDE THE HEAD AND REMIND THEM - AND EVERYBODY ELSE - THAT THEY STARTED IT. THEY RAISED FIGHTING DIRTY TO A HIGH ART. THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN NOW, WHEN THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT. It's about damned time they got a taste of their own medicine.

Larry Flynt? Fine. He's at enough of a distance that Kerry doesn't have to get soiled by it. Flynt looked into this last time when Kerry wasn't in the picture, so he couldn't possibly be portrayed as a Kerry operative. If he is, this fact should be pointed out. Besides, Larry Flynt seems to know something about investigative reporting, and his efforts DID INDEED out Newt Gingrich, Robert Livingstone, Henry Hyde, Bob Barr, Dan Burton, and other hypocrites who were going after Clinton during the Monica business. Gingrich and Livingstone had to fall on their swords for their party, and Hyde, and Burton had to shut up and crawl back into the shadows. Bob Barr, too, was tarred, and subsequently defeated. It's the only thing these people know and understand. If they've determined that THIS is the coin of the realm, fine. Let's open our own bank.

The only way you beat a bully is by facing them down, and hitting them back. And hitting back HARD. And if that means up the ass, so be it. Wouldn't it be appropriate, and satisfying, to see KKKarl Rove have to deal with an enema that lasted for months?

As george w. schmuck himself would put it - "BRING 'EM ON."

Three days before the Nov. election, every person on this board and others like it should do at least 10 push poll calls a day:

Would you be more or less likely to vote for the republican party if you knew:

1) George Bush was awol in 1972, due to
2) Seving community service time for a cocaine conviction.

And would it change your view of the republican party and their candidates if you knew:

3) George Bush committed stauatory rape on a 15 yr. old girl;
4) And subsequently covered it up with an illegal abortion?

Go Larry! Your magazine is disgusting, but if you nail this cretin for us, I at least will forgive you that...might even take out a lifetime subscription, which will be mailed straight to my trashcan. Bring it on indeed!!!!!

22. if the story is true, it's about more than an abortion
and Bush getting religion after the fact.

if true, Bush helped a woman get an abortion when it was ILLEGAL to get an abortion.

he opposes abortion now because it's a sop to the talibornagains, but he knows that the rich will always be able to buy their way around the laws.

just like Noelle Bush's three convictions for CRACK cocaine...and her ten DAY sentence.

just like Bush getting into the Nat'l Guard and blowing it off, and like the chickenhawks in his administration who, as Cheney said, had "better things to do."

just like Bush getting bailed out by his daddy's friends and then calling himself a successful biz man, and the sweetheart deal with Bahrain for Harken, when Bush's co. had NO EXPERIENCE and lost to those who did, but then his daddy's middle eastern buddies (and Orrin Hatch's too, for that matter) were giving out the contract.

like one of his investors being in biz with 9-11 committee chair Kean now, and that same investor being listed, since 99, as a financier of terrorism...

seems like John Lindh didn't get the same leniency for his association with terrorists...

75. The Bush Abortion Story from BartCop
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 03:12 PM by Angel_O_Peace
Desperate Measures: George W. Bush & Abortion

Note: Apparently, the source of this story was due to go public (in 2000) via publisher Larry
Flynt, but found out that Flynt was planning to make a tabloid sale, and changed her mind.
Like George W. Bush's intervention in commuting the sentence of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas,
this is a story that is circulating in the press packs, but that few people want to touch at the
eleventh hour of the 2000 U.S. presidential election.

In the winter of 1971 George W. Bush was dating a woman named Robin Lowman
(now Robin Garner). Miss Lowman became pregnant by Bush and he arranged for
her to have an abortion - which in the great state of Texas in 1971 was very illegal!
Not to mention that George W. is running as a pro-life candidate for the presidency.

The unnamed source of this story, was a friend of Robin Lowman's and the girlfriend of the man who arranged the abortion. His name is Robert Carl Chandler. Chandler is a Bush friend and supporter from way back and he made the arrangements for Miss
Lowman's abortion at the Twelve Oaks Hospital in Houston, TX (now the Bayou City Medical Center). The source overheard the call by Mr. Chandler to arrange the abortion and the source visited Robin Lowman at the Twelve Oaks Hospital after the procedure.

Read the rest of the story here
(just a couple of more paragraphs):

it's time for the kidgloves to come off. the press doesn't voluntarily pursue stories on the repukes unless they are "feel good" stories, but (as evident with the fake kerry intern story) the press foams at the mouth to rush after any smell of blood on the democratic candidates. Flynt is pushing this because the press has been sleeping on the job for the last 3 years.

In case you missed it, here's the transcript from CNN's Crossfire by Dave "Doctor" Gonzo

Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000 -- NEW YORK (AmpolNS) -- Thank goodness for Larry Flynt.

Mr. Novak: Sir, I gather you're a very strong Gore supporter. Is that correct?

Mr. Flynt: I'll vote for the lesser of the two evils -- I don't like either one of them!

24. Republicans have been benefitting from scandal that draws audiences.
Why wouldn't or shouldn't the Democrats? Being "above" the fray of Republican venom has simply allowed the Republicans to use underhanded tactics to defeat us. In my view, either we fight back until the battle is won, placing ourselves in a position to have influence in positive ways,...or we continue fighting to lose.

NOT. The sleaze as you call it is real. Johnny Walker has the absolute best depiction of Bush. He is a fucking devil hence his graphic is spot on. But we should not "let that stuff get out." BAH. Anyone following politics already knows that Bush is an ignorant devil shitdustbag. Here's my advice moralist build a bridge and get over yourself.

BTW the We and Us lingua franca attempts at unity are really lame.

46. God, I hope this can be proven
A huge portion of W supporters like him for two reasons: he's a Christian and they (wrongly) believe he's a tough Texan who's great at protecting this country. The AWOL thing if proven can show him to be a liar and a "deserter." That chips away at both of those qualites (Christian and tough patriot) the Bushbots hold so dear.

The abortion situation, as discussed, should greatly diminish the religious advantage he has. Someone made a good point about his folks forgiving him, as good Christians are supposed to do. Well, abortion is murder to the pro-life set. Many of these people also support the death penalty, which is far from forgiveness. How can we put folks to death for one type of murder and forgive another? I don't know if that would sink in with them, but maybe the Dem candidate could connect the dots for them.

Then if we are lucky we might be able to get an exclusive interview with her current family, or even children :bounce:, and ask them if they knew their wife/mother had had an abortion when she was young. Who knows, maybe it will cause such a stir that her current marriage could break up and we could blame Bush for that also.

I mean, it really doesn't matter what kind of harm we could possibly do to this woman's family and life by bringing up facts from her past, right? I figure she has it coming just for having slept with Bush. :puke:

Now paralysed porn king Larry Flynt is preparing to publish equally dubious claims that the pro-life Mr Bush once made a girlfriend have an abortion.

Why is this charge "dubious"? Such things have no doubt happened thousands of times to couples of all walks of life. It's just part of the human sexual territory, really. If Bush did do this, it would hurt him far less to admit the truth than to try to cover it up. He's such a child about lying.

Flint isn't an idiot...He knows that this story would have more legs if someone other than himself broke it.

Flynt should make a deal with a "legit" writer/paper/magazine/etc...and let THEM break the story. How much weight will noted pornographer have here?

If Flynt really wants to nail Bush he should pass this story off to someone else. I believe its just a publicity stunt to get press for himself.

Don't get your hopes up...When our only hope to "break a story" on Bush is from someone like Like Flynt then that says all you need to say about the shape of our democracy and media.

84. Texas Law
<What you may need to know about Sexual Assault:
Age 17 is an adult for all practical purposes under the law.
Age 14 is the cut off for being a child under the law.
No one under the age of 17 can legally consent to sex.
A 3-year age difference must exist for "statutory rape" charges. (The actual charge on this offense is sexual assault; there is no statutory rape in the state of Texas).
If you are even thinking about prosecuting a sexual assault, go to a hospital in your county and have a rape kit exam performed. A rape kit may be done at law enforcement's expense within the first 72 hours following an assault.
The rape kit exam must be performed in the county in which the assault occurred regardless of personal preference. This is not a payment issue, it is a prosecution issue.
Statute of limitations on sexual assault is 5 years.
Statute of limitations on child sexual assault is 10 years past the victim's eighteenth birthday.>

98. Jackson Thoreau stated that there were FOUR abortions re: Bush (8/2i/03
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 11:07 PM by Angel_O_Peace
As Bush hypocritically pushes anti-abortion agenda, did he impregnate young women and make them get abortions in his single days?

By Jackson Thoreau

<snip>
In the course of some research, this source learned that Bush might have impregnated FOUR young women, one of whom was UNDER 18, which is against the law in most states. At least one supposedly had to be sent out of the country to get the abortion done.

I called a hospital where one of these abortions might have occurred, and a spokesperson said the hospital didn’t release such records, if they exist at all. Remember how we found out about Bush’s 1976 driving while intoxicated conviction in 2000? That record had been buried in a court in Maine, and it was only through the perseverance of a television reporter that it was unearthed. This is a pattern in dealing with Bush, who has left a trail of buried and purged public records throughout his life.

Through public records, I located the present address of one of the women, who is one year younger than Bush and living in a Texas town with her husband, who is reportedly an FBI agent. But my efforts to call her stalled when I discovered her phone number is unlisted. Since her town is about 300 miles from mine, I couldn’t conceivably drive there. I doubt she would talk to me anyway; she was probably either paid to stay quiet or intimidated into silence by the Republi-Thug Mafia.

I also discovered the name of another woman who Bush allegedly made get an abortion, rather than father his child, during his carefree and forgetful younger days . But I have had no luck tracking her down, either.
