Jailed governor Siegelman says Rove subpoena 'restores people's faith in democracy'
Source: Raw Story - John Byrne, Larisa Alexandrovna

Alabama Governor Don Siegelman had it all -- popularity, a governor's chair and a seemingly normal politician's life -- until he found himself on the other end of a US Attorney appointed by President George W. Bush.

Siegelman, who was convicted of corruption charges in 2006, was released on bail last April pending appeal after media reports -- including those of Raw Story -- revealed myriad irregularities surrounding his prosecution.

Among the relevations: the husband of the US Attorney who prosecuted Siegelman was a close associate of former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and worked as campaign manager for one of Siegelman's gubernatorial opponents. An Alabama Republican whistleblower said that Siegelman was deliberately targeted and fingered Rove, asserting that he'd said he'd push the Justice Department to end Siegelman's political career.

In a statement to Raw Story Monday night, Siegelman expressed hope that Rove's alleged role in his prosecution might be uncovered.

1. Siegleman was a political victim; imprisoned for "acts never previously regarded as crimes."
His case is just about the SCARIEST SHIT I've ever heard of
happening in the modern USA, and it shows what a FARCE the USA
had become under the B*sh Dictatorship.

When I was a kid, they told me 'horror stories' about how
evil and unfair life was under the Commie Dictators in the USSR.
Trumped-up political vendettas, and "Show Trials".
The Siegleman Persecution was one of those stories come to life
right here in the USA.

2. Um, a subpoena from *Conyers* means exactly squat....

EDIT: Unless maybe they're trying to crush Rove under the weight of sternly-worded letters.

I prefer the subpoena from Conyers world to the no subpoena at all world.
You know, damns breaking, critical mass, tipping points, a new direction for morale type stuff. ;)

10. Siegelman's bar is set too low if a subpoena restores his faith.
Rove and the other members of the Bush cabal have been served subpoenas before and just thumb their noses and make stuff up about executive privilege.

My faith in the system won't be restored until I see Rove et al actually face due process and receive what they deserve. In the mean time, I'll continue with my cynical attitude that our judicial system is two-tiered--the wealthy and powerful can ignore laws while the rest of us face the consequences when we break laws.

6. K&R
Don Siegelman could truly have been considered a political prisoner in the U.S. His story should be a warning to us all, and required study in all political science departments at our universities.

7. Is Siegelman eligible at this point to run for political office?
If so, it would be great to nominate him against that asshole Shelby.

15. A subpoena only "restores faith in democracy" if the recipient isn't allowed to ignore it.
