ROME -- By a wide margin, Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government won a confidence vote Tuesday on legislation aimed at saving one of his private television channels from being forced off free TV and onto satellite.
Also Tuesday, Berlusconi announced that he will run in European Parliament elections in June, and he rejected demands by the leftist opposition that he step down as the nation's leader should he lose the race.
Passage by the Chamber of Deputies, by a vote of 328 to 230, was the last hurdle, since Parliament's upper chamber, approved the measure last month.
The government chose to put the measure to a confidence vote, a strategy generally aimed at ensuring that the ruling coalition's lawmakers close ranks and back the bill.
