Reports: 2 shot dead, 7 hurt at Wichita wake

WICHITA, Kan. – Police say two people were killed and seven injured in a shooting at a wake in southeastern Wichita.

Deputy Police Chief Robert Lee tells The Wichita Eagle and KAKE-TV that all the victims of Saturday night's shooting were adults. He did not know their ages or genders.

One victim was reported in critical condition and four others were in serious condition.

Lee says the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. during a wake at someone's house. He could not say how many shooters were involved but says some of the shots came from outside.

3. Kind of unusual to hear of wakes being held at a private home these days
It used to be a lot more common to hold a wake at private homes, but it's kind of rare these days.

15. I've heard of it being done
One of the previous owners of the home I live in had his wake in the living room. My maternal Grandpa had relatives who had their wakes in what would eventually become his home.

My paternal Grandpa had a brother that died in 1924, this brother was around three years old at the time. Grandpa was not quite even one year old at the time of his brother's death. And Grandpa swears up and down that he remembers the wake held for his brother at his parents home, even though he wasn't even a year old yet. A lot of other people flat out refused to believe him, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here.

4. 2 dead 7 wounded in Portland Oregon (next to Kells) last night
and 2 dead and 7 wounded in Miami yesterday.

That's a Three-fer

Aaron Hull, 18, of Salem said he and some friends had tried to get into The Zone and were 30 to 40 yards away when they heard gunfire. As they ducked and ran, they heard about nine shots; it "sounded like a whole clip got emptied," Hull said. They walked around the block and turned to see bodies on the sidewalk. Hull said people were screaming and running.

The Portland Police Bureau's Gang Enforcement Team Lt. Mike Leloff said the shooting does not appear to be gang-related.

<snip>

As officers tried to sort through a chaotic scene, witnesses gave similar accounts of multiple shots being fired and numerous people injured.

Alexandra Paulus, 18, said a 16-year-old friend was shot while standing in line outside The Zone. His mother had called Paulus to go downtown and help find out what happened to her son as she headed there, too. Paulus said her friend had been shot in the leg, and his wound did not appear to be serious. Joel Walker, 27, was going downtown to help a friend open his bratwurst cart business across the street from Kells. He saw at least three people loaded into ambulances.

"One of the girls looked pretty bad," he said. "Her friends were crying."

Meanwhile, all quiet down under (where firearms are heavily regulated) -on the eve of Australia Day.
