GOP introduces bill allowing display of Ten Commandments (Georgia)
GOP introduces bill allowing display of Ten Commandments

By CARLOS CAMPOS
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/17/04

House Republicans Tuesday unveiled their much-anticipated plan to allow government agencies to post the Ten Commandments in courthouses and other public buildings throughout Georgia.

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Sharpsburg), a candidate for Congress, will introduce legislation that would allow local and state government to display historical documents with religious significance, including the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and the Ten Commandments. The law would require the state attorney general to defend in court any government that posts all three of those documents.

Westmoreland said the legislation is a response to the removal of the Ten Commandments from a courthouse in Alabama last year, and similar battles in Habersham and Barrow counties.

1. I guess stupid is as stupid does...
Do you think they'll ever figure out that state laws cannot override the US Constitution?

4. it's all for show
They know it's an ultimately losing position, but if they can get enough people mad about the issue, they figure they'll gain votes, even though the position is ultimately illegal.

7. Well, they get ME mad about it...
because they are wasting taxpayer $ on stupid stuff that ends up costing millions to fight it out in court! I'm not a GA citizen, but they pull the same crap in TX, so I get pretty hostile about it. What I can't figure out is how they justify it when the state budgets are so tight that they can't even pay the bills for programs that they've enacted!

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 08:19 PM by mac2
Such as the voting fraud during the last stolen election in Georgia, George's debt, war, etc.

You can tell an election is coming up...all the religious and sex issues come forward!!!

2. They ought to post the Bill of Rights.
That would be much more appropriate, and possibly enlightening.

5. Constitution
It would be nice if they at least treated the Constitution as an aspirational goal.

8. Constitution and Bill of Rigths?
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 08:16 PM by mac2
What chapter of the Bible is that?

When Georgia stated, they wanted the Conferate flag on their new flag for historical reasons, I asked why not the Union Jack because they were a former British colony, Ireland (many prisoners from Ireland were sent to Georgia), Indian tribal symbols for the natives originally there, Pirates who hid there, etc. The Confederacy was just a small part of that history.

What about our national flag? What if we had a flag within a flag for our history? We would have to have the following flags on it...Russia, France, British, Spainish, Mexican, American Indian tribes...there's hundred of those, etc. There wouldn't be room.

It's a rediculous concept and meant to be bigoted against the Yankees and Blacks. Many in the south have a mix both because we don't stay in one area of the country forever and humans being what they are...

I had a Confederate high ranking military man in my Yankee heritage. We don't talk about that side of the family!! Two Virgian unlces of mine were in the Civil War fighting on opposite sides (drove their Mom crazy going back and forth with food, clothes, etc).

Many Georgians are still stuck back in that small frame of history. It's not real and it's not practical. Darlings..."Gone with the Wind" is a movie!!

How about entering the 21st Century and leave behind your hate and ignorance? Go toward a better future...one every citizen in your state can feel wanted and a contributor.

9. Georgia's making a name for itself...
First the school's ban on teaching evolution, then this. If these people want to live in a religious state, they should just move.

11. well the evolution thing sort of fizzled
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 07:51 PM by DinoBoy
They wnated to change the wording from "evolution" to "biological change through time." Everyone from Jimmy Carter to current Gov Sunny Perdue (R) thought that was idiotic, so the change was never implimented.

Although...... A wide range of topics like US History 1812-1890, big bang theory and plate tectonic theory are still being ommitted....

12. That's right.
Give them one state of the union and let them turn it into a theocracy. But all the konservative fundies have to live there. They can't infiltrate other states to ban abortions or teach creationism in science class or any other nonsense.

13. This is more rallying the hardcore W=god, his opponents=devil voters. ech.
The GOP is so worried about losing their own base of supporters because of military and economic failures that they are poking the Fundamentalists with a stick to get their support in electing W.

To the American Taliban, anyone who opposes Jesus Bush is the devil. How many tens of thousands do you have to kill before Jesus objects?

Religious crazies all over the place.

One of my favorite quotes:
"Too many Christians are busy sucking the finger
instead of going where it is pointing."

I will never spend another penny in your state. It was a nice, but poor state last time I was there. But never ever will I travel there or stop there or spend another nickel there. Thank you very much. Your state needs to get with it.

28. Amen to that
Friends from Atlanta will be coming up to Boston to visit. Evolution, the Confederate flag, the Ten Commandments. Maybe Georgia should secede and form its own country. We should give Atlanta the choice of remaining in the US, as the city is filled with Dems and progressives.

27. isn't it funny
how these people who demand the 10 commandments be posted do not stop and think about God's greatest law, Love. He wanted us to love one another. He didn't qualify it in any way, shape, form, color, sexuality, religion, goodness, badness. He simply asked us to love one another. And is there not a commandment that states "do not take the Lord's name in vain"? Are they not doing this exact thing? Using God's name to hurt, incite anger, cause chaos? And God also said to especially find love for those who it is hard to love.

God did not cause all this ugliness in the world. That is man-made by people who put the qualifiers in and made up unnecessary rules that get in the way or push people away.

Well, just MHO.
