Report: Israel, Hamas agree on 2-week truce
Source: Ynet

Palestinian sources told Ynet on Thursday evening that Israel and Hamas have agreed on all the general outlines of the Egyptian ceasefire initiative to end the fighting in Gaza.

According to the report, the sides have agreed on the truce, on the supervision of the smuggling issue, on the crossings and on lifting of the blockade imposed on the Strip.

According to the sources, the two sides are expected to agree on a ceasefire which will likely begin within 72 hours and last up to two weeks.

During this period of time, the parties will discuss the Israel Defense Forces' withdrawal from Gaza and the withdrawal's timing. Palestinian sources estimated that the pullback into Israel would be swift.

1. Egypt brokered the peace agreement? Remember when America used to do shit like that?

I bet even Ronald Reagan is turning over in his grave right now.

And he can do that, because he's much thinner now.

Will this cease-fire officially expire before or after the Israeli elections?

5. Probably better coming from Egypt
The neighboring countries are in a better position to broker the solution.

All future solutions should include their neighbors.

9. Israel non-committal on Hamas truce
---

After studying Hamas's terms for a halt to the conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni would fly to Washington to promote a key Israeli demand -- a guaranteed end to Hamas weapons smuggling via Egypt.

But Olmert, following top-level talks, did not address conditions put forward by Hamas via Egyptian mediators. Some diplomats expected Israel would be cool to some of the terms.

Hamas proposed a year-long, renewable cease-fire, the withdrawal of all Israel forces within 5 to 7 days, and the immediate opening of all Gaza border crossings, backed by international guarantees they would stay open.

11. This is going to be real gallows humor, but...
Anyone want to start a pool on which day of the truce Israel will start attacking again? I'm putting $5 (hey, I'm tapped!) on day 8, in response to someone's dog barking at 3 AM at the border

13. Israel by its own admission on the BBC admits it broke the truce
that set off this recent massacre in Gaza.

Israel has blood all over its hands.

15. "truce"? truce would mean there was war, with 2 sides fighting.
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 11:44 PM by Hannah Bell
on the one hand, some covert popgun rockets, less than 30 dead in 7 years.

on the other, bombers, tanks, helicopters, real rockets, regular army, 1000 dead in a couple of weeks.

What "truce"?

"Israel agrees to stop massacre" is the headline i want to see.
