APNo Salmonella Complaints Reported
POSTED: 9:01 am EST January 15, 2009
ROANOKE, Va. -- Kellogg asked stores to stop selling a variety of crackers containing peanut paste supplied by a Virginia company that's issued a nationwide recall of peanut butter produced at one of its plants.
Kellogg said its request to pull peanut butter crackers sold under the Austin and Keebler brands was made out of caution. The company said it hasn't found any problems or received complaints about those products.
Lynchburg-based Peanut Corp. of America issued the recall Tuesday night because of possible salmonella contamination. The recall is for 21 lots of peanut butter made since July 1 at its plant in Blakely, Ga.
The recall was issued after an open container of peanut butter in a long-term care facility in Minnesota was found to contain a strain of salmonella.
A national salmonella outbreak has sickened more than 430 people in 43 states. Five deaths in Virginia, Minnesota and Idaho have been linked to the outbreak. But the causes of those deaths haven't been determined.
