Bush to Meet With National Guard Members
By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - After trying to quell stories about his Vietnam-era military record, President Bush is seeking to move beyond it by meeting with National Guard members in Louisiana.

Bush was spending Tuesday at Fort Polk, La., giving a speech to thank troops there for their service and sacrifice, White House aides said. Two soldiers killed by a roadside bomb while on mounted patrol in Iraq last week were assigned to Fort Polk. <snip>

After the speech, Bush was lunching with National Guard members at the base. Thousands of Guard troops have trained at Fort Polk in recent months.

The president's visit is bound to serve as a reminder of a story that consumed the White House last week: Bush's record of service in the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s.

At issue is whether he showed up for service in Alabama after receiving permission to serve there temporarily in 1972-1973. Bush says he recalls serving there, but there is scant documentation proving it.

3. So it's back to photo ops
with people who are ordered to clap for you.

I guess that Nascar thing didn't go so well after all.

BTW: Pictures of W in 2004 with the NG in LA will not take the place of the fact that W doesn't have any pictures of himself with the NG in AL in 1973. Not even photoshop can fix that problem?

4. Those Guard members still have to clap for the "disgrace."
Would love to see them sit there stone-faced and clapping softly.

Oh, wait , we'd never see it.

Oh, is that a good idea, relieving us of the President's sound bites.

14. He'll make a quick trip to Alabama...
Just so he can say, "I was with the Guard in Alabama!"

When in doubt, obfuscate!

12. this is in your face typical Bush arrogance.
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 10:52 AM by Marianne
He is going to show everyone who is boss--and shove it in your face--I say I served, prove I did not -- and off he goes, in a grand scheme to be photo oped with his military jacket on, addressing the troops, who will cheer and cheer and cheer--he has to display his arrogance of power and sense of entitlement as the unelected president, to those who accuse him of going AWOL. People will then surely believe he did not go AWOL--would he show up like this if he did? Well, the normal person might have a sense of shame or guilt, but not this prick. In fact, that is probably his psychology--people will say he is not acting like he did anything wrong.

But then, some will remember Nixon.

Too bad he has to use these troops like pawns in his campaign quest.
