Under Fire Over Jobs, Bush Hones Upbeat Message
By Adam Entous

TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - President Bush stepped up a counter-offensive against his Democratic rivals on the economy, boldly talking up the recovery on Monday to counter complaints about the unemployed and jobs moving overseas.

Contrary to recent polls and the election-year charges of his presidential challengers, Bush said there was an "undeniable" sense of optimism about the economy.

Democrats accused the Republican president of being out of touch. Nearly 2.8 million factory jobs have been lost since Bush took office and the issue looms large ahead of November's vote.

During a 49-minute round-table at a Tampa window and door factory, Bush described the economy as "strong" four times, expressed optimism repeatedly, and said how "upbeat" he was another four times.

Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry countered that such appearances were more about "creating photo opportunities than job opportunities."

1. You know what would convince me the economy's better?
If * went out and bought some really nice socks! His dad did it in '92 and convinced the entire country that the recession was over. Oh...wait...um, nevermind.

3. that's the problem ...
... with this administration. Everything is about "the message".

Memo to Bush* maladministration - you can "message" all you want, but at some point people expect results. We've got NO results, on the Iraq front, on the economic front, on ANY front.

So keep blathering your "message". The more you do, the more it strikes a sharp contrast between reality as Americans are living it and your ridiculous rosy scenarios. And it points out more effectively than we ever could just how abjectly delusional you are.

{Show the video of Bush saying this}
"Forty workers here, five workers there, begin to add up."

In 2001 Bush told us that his tax cuts would create 575,000 new jobs.

In 2002 he told us that his tax cuts would create 2,500,000 new jobs.

In 2003 he told us that his tax cuts would create 2,000,000 new jobs.

In 1993 the republican party told us that passing president Clinton's tax bill would destroy the economy and put millions out of work.

{Show the video of Bush saying this}
"There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says, fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again."

Can your family afford to be fooled again?

12. "jobs moving overseas" will be *the* issue
Jobs moving overseas will be *the* perfect wedge issue of the 2004 campaign. No one cares about Bush's military service.

Democrats need to remind voters daily that Bush supports sending jobs overseas.

19. Probably just a reference to Halliburton's optimism.
"Opportunism" is a pretty challenging word. Bush wouldn't try it without a net (teleprompter).

23. Why is it that everything that this jagoff does, he does "boldly"?!?
"...... boldly talking up the recovery on Monday to counter complaints about the unemployed and jobs moving overseas."

Its never circumspectly, carefully, judiciously, prudently, or intelligently. Its always boldly. However, I suppose one could look upon talking up this crap economy as "boldness".

"Fools boldly go where angels fear to tread."
