Iraq 'slipping into civil war'
Iraq 'slipping into civil war'
UN envoy Brahimi warns Iraqi leaders that civil strife will ensue if they fail to put national interests ahead of their own

BAGHDAD - The signs are becoming more evident that Iraq may be slipping into civil war as rivalry and resentment among its ethnic and religious groups become more and more pronounced.

Veteran United Nations envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has pointedly warned Iraqi leaders that they face 'very serious dangers' if they do not put the interests of the nation ahead of those of their clans, tribes, ethnic groups and religious communities.

He had just finished a visit to the country to determine the feasibility of elections.

At a press conference, he appealed to the members of the Governing Council and to Iraqis in every part of the country to be 'conscious that civil wars do not happen because a person makes a decision, 'Today, I'm going to start a civil war' '.

He told Iraqis that civil wars erupt 'because people are reckless, people are selfish, because people think more of themselves than they do of their country'.

Iraq 'slipping into civil war'

All it would take is a spark to launch a massive civil war. What would that spark be?

1. I'm sure that Bush will manage
to figure out how to provide the needed spark. Just give him time.

3. Slipping?
That makes it sound so... I dunno... like a "she slipped into something more comfortable" sort of thing. Don't countries usually "degenerate" or "degrade" when falling apart?

civil war was predicted by many observers as a consequence of the colonisation of iraq..the strengthening resistance movement adopting age old guerilla warfare tactics are undermining the ability of the occuping forces to rally local inhabitants to form the next mercenary force to oppress the people of iraq..(as saddam did so successfully for his western masters)..with the death of each coalition soldier producing adverse political problems for the regime..bush has seen fit to abandon a devastated country to its own devices and the subsequent result will be the death of many more innocent iraqis..and an inevitable civil war which will eventually result in a theocracy being in power in this country..
