Thanks to the many people who made this possible. Too bad MBAs and the CNN talking heads aren't eligible for this.

4. Makes you wish ...

It makes you wish that you simply skipped college and became an electrician. Union work, better wages (these days).

Is it too late to go to plumbers school????

One thing is FOR SURE. You won't see foreign imports invading these fields from overseas. They would probably leave with their hands broken.

When the whole wage structure starts to crumble, even the strongest Union will be unable to hold the line.

I fear I hear the rumbling of crumbling structures even as we speak...

3. Accountants

I WAS a programmer. But I will probably end up going into teaching now. I have some skills there. But I'd rather be writing code.

Besides, teachers are treated like shit by:

* Students
* Administrators
* Elected Officials
* Parents
* Taxpayers

etc....

You are right, once enough headcount is overseas, the low and mid level manager jobs will start going. Then they will have to get snitch jobs at Wal-Mart ;-)

6. related article: Siemens to relocate 15,000 jobs
http://www.iht.com/cgi-bin/generic.cgi?template=articleprint.tmplh&ArticleId=129906

BANGALORE, India Siemens, the German electronics maker, said Monday that it would move most of the 15,000 software programming jobs from its offices in the United States and Western Europe to locations such as India, China and Eastern Europe.

"Siemens has recognized that a huge amount of software development activity needs to be moved from high-cost countries to low-cost countries," said Anil Laud, managing director of Information Systems, the group's information technology subsidiary in India.

<snip>

Scores of companies in Europe and North America have farmed out software development and back- office work to India and other countries where wages are significantly lower. India is expected to earn $13 billion from such services for the financial year ending March 2004.

The job shift has sparked a backlash from some unions and politicians in Western countries who see little more to such plans than job losses for programmers at home.
