Alcohol 'snorting' worries docs
British medical experts expressed concern on Monday at a new, and apparently legal, trend towards "snorting" alcohol, using a tube into the mouth in order to inhale the drug.

Oliver James, head of clinical medical sciences at Newcastle University, said: "By snorting the alcohol, it can go directly into the brain without being filtered by the liver.

"What is getting into your brain could be the equivalent of many times more than by drinking it," said the professor.

Those using a new device known as an Alcohol without Liquid (Awol) vaporiser would get drunk more quickly, but could also suffer "irreversible damage to nerves" that could lead to swelling and possibly dementia in the longer term," said James.

Now we know how the 'Pretzel Death Incident' began!

1. Guess it's an open question
whether the onset of the dementia occurred before the snorting began.

2. back when i did more drugs
i tried using Jagermeister as bong water and, wow, yeah you can get drunk through your lungs. though Jager also seems to have opiates in it

it was interesting, and different, but probably not a good idea.

4. bad move, THC is not water soluble
but is alcohol soluble. So, unless you drank the Jagermeister afterwards (YUCK) you lost some of the buzz.

7. actually, it skylined me more than usual
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 07:30 PM by codegreen
on the same amount of bud. the Jager definately intensified the experience somewhat

but again that may be result of the lung-drunkeness and possible opium-like qualities of Jager (there's something about that stuff... it's not just alchohol)

13. Back when I did "more" drugs?
So you haven't stopped? LOL!

You remind me of me back in college. I've stopped, but I remember doing stupid stuff like that. I'm amazed that I still have living brain cells.

Interesting experience, but not one I think I'll repeat.

3. Tried this
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 07:21 PM by leanings
in the UK, back in '99. I think we used brandy or something. Damn crazy Scots at the bar talked me into it. Just put some in a spoon and up the nose she went. Burned like hell.

I've also heard snorting vodka referred to as a "Chilly Willy" but I can't say I tried it.

Whoops. And then I went and read the article. Not what I tried at all.

5. Chemical pneumonia?
I seem to remember chemical pneumonia to be a potential problem with aspirated EtOH. That's not good.

8. I don't see the problem
I've snorted every substance known to mankind, and a few that are known only to me -- when compared to meth or heroin, vodka's really not such a big deal.

(for the record: running clean and sober these days)

"By snorting the alcohol, it can go directly into the brain without being filtered by the liver."

WOW! I've heard everything now.

Western ideals at work, eh? Be FREE to do dumb crap 24/7 without any consequences ...well there is that brain damage part. Our western judeo-christian freedoms are awesome, aren't they? Now pass me the tube, go rent some quality porn, and lets enjoy our freedoms! Isn't it perfect!?

12. Evolution about to get some help?
While this does seem worrisome for the general public, can anyone think of any reason why it shouldn't be widely distributed to the nation's college fraternities and Young Republicans immediately?

news that an aquaintance of mine recently tried a tequila enema. He was messed up for days, in and out of black outs, couldn't walk.

18. I love you guys!
I never expected to be *this* entertained by the responses to this thread. I thought I'd heard everything, but tequila enemas? What a waste of perfectly good (or bad) tequila. I had to stop drinking my coffee to finish reading! Thanks for the laughs!

20. Didn't * say he'd given up drinking...
but he didn't say he'd given up alcohol? Maybe this explains why he acts drunk sometimes... He didn't drink, he just inhaled!
