Jewish center in Germany damaged
Source: ynet - news/AP

German police say a Jewish community center in the northern port city of Rostock was damaged by vandals in an apparent anti-Semitic attack.

Police said Thursday that one or more suspects threw stones through several windows overnight, including a pane decorated with the star of David. The building was defaced with graffiti last week that included a crossed-out star of David. Authorities made no immediate link to the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip. (AP)

1. Oppostion to Israeli policies is not anti-semitism
They just happen to coincide frequently.

2. But targetting a religious building rather then a consulate is.

3. just a guess but maybe that was the only thing around
the only thing remotely related to Israel

and the Star of David is on the Israeli flag

all that aside it is stupid and proves nor solves anything

6. It still makes it anti-semitism- something Germany still struggles with
Something we in America still struggle with.

One can definitely be anti-Israeli government or even be anti-Israeli without being anti-jew.

ANY excuse will do.

14. "One can definitely be anti-Israeli government or even be anti-Israeli without being anti-jew."
Apparently, some cannot.

15. And that is unfortunate (and criminal).
Let's hope peace can somehow be found.

5. And vandalizing any building is wrong
Protesting outside an embassy is one thing, but vandalizing a building is wrong, period. It's kind of sickening that a hate crime happens against a Jewish center and the response from someone here is "well, it's just opposition to Israel's policies, not anti-semitism". I'm sure if it were a Muslim center or a GLBT rights group the reaction would be a lot different.

7. My point want whether or not vandalizing a building was wrong or not
My point was that one targets a government and they other targets a religion. The one targetting the religion can be properly called "antisemitism"

4. Wonder why they coincide...

Your statement really puzzles me. If the two coincide, then one negates the validity of the other, imo.

11. Because anti-semites will use Israel's real and imagined sins as an excuse for their actions
But they don't really need an excuse; they were doing this sort of thing long before Israel ever existed.

10. This may not even be related to Israeli policies
Many parts of the world have trouble with neo-Nazi thugs.

At least Germany treats such crimes with appropriate seriousness (for obvious reasons) so IF the thugs are caught, they'll be in deep trouble. But they may not be caught, of course.

13. BINGO!
I pointed out upthread that the area has a thug problem in general. In view of current circumstances it will be dealt with swiftly and severely, I'm quite certain.

17. And, it must also be said, this type of attack does NOT justify the Occupation
nor the Siege of Gaza.

19. It's going to be trumpeted by the "Israel can do no wrong" crowd
With their "new antisemitism" myth.

If you don't agree with that, I'm relieved.

It's probable that it will turn out to be German neofascists doing this anyway.

20. It is more likely "trumpeted" by those who excuse anti-Semitism as legitimate "criticism" of Israel.
Of course, they are the ones who wouldn't know anti-Semitism if a neo-Nazi presented them with a lampshade with a tattoo.

It's unacceptable.
