Muslims Plan Boycott Of American Goods
Source: MySinchew

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 2,000 Muslim restaurants in Malaysia will remove Coca-Cola from their menus as part of a boycott of American products in protest against Israel's bombardment of Gaza, officials said Wednesday (7 Jan).

American companies are being targeted becuase of the U.S. government's support of Israel, which is carrying out a military offensive on Gaza that is says is aimed at stopping rocket attacks from the Hamas-controlled territory.

The nationwide boycott will be launched Friday (9 Jan) by several Muslim groups after they seek God's blessings at Friday prayers, said Ma'mor Osman, secretary-general of the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association which is leading the campaign.

In addition to Coca-Cola, he said they have identified some 100 other products ranging from food to beauty and clothing such as Starbucks, Colgate, McDonald's and Maybelline.

A billion people not buying american products might make a dent in the corporate refusal to condamn Israel. They should target companies that have a lot of stake in the media, such as GE. In fact westerners should follow along with this boycott.

10. Do they think the Coca-Cola is bottled here and sent over there?
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 02:18 PM by mrone2
Seems they will be hurting their own local labor force on that one. The rest of those items like clothing, and Cosmetic products aren't even manufactured here in America. Let them boycott....

We don't export US manufactured goods, we export trademarks.

11. Trademarks still collect tribute
The local labor force can quickly ramp up on their own brands and quit paying Americans for the right to use images and slogans.

7. Sounds like it is more targeted at American companies than goods.
"In addition to Coca-Cola, he said they have identified some 100 other products ranging from food to beauty and clothing such as Starbucks, Colgate, McDonald's and Maybelline."

Looks like they want to boycott Jewish (not just Israeli) companies as well. "The Muslim Consumers Association Malaysia (PPIM) will launch a nationwide campaign urging Malaysians to boycott products made by Jewish companies following Israel's military invasion of Gaza."

19. Well they think they're American goods...
I am rolling on the floor - most of the "American" goods are made in many of these same countries that are going to boycott them. At some point they might wake up to the reality of America when everyone gets laid off from the factories that make the "American" goods.

Which might wake up Americans to the reality of America. Although I doubt anything at this point can.

15. US doesn't manufacture a lot of consumer goods, but it makes plenty of industrial goods
You could look it up.

US is either the #1 or #2 manufacturing country in the world, depending on the metric used. US industrial output is just shy of $3 trillion/year. That's more than China's entire economy, and approximately double its industrial output. China is the #3 manufacturer in the world.

21. That's a pretty drastic step for MY.
The country has been relatively tame in international politics over the past few years--most likely because they're in the middle of a few internal scandals involving elected officials, judges, and bribery.

25. I thought Muslim nations already boycotted Coca-Cola because of Jews on its board
Maybe that's old information, but I'm pretty sure coworkers who had lived in Saudi Arabia in the '70s told me it was not available in that country.

29. Coke is everywhere here... This boycott will not work as the retail scene here is more American
than America! You would have to boycott every freakin' mall... I don't want to bore you with the store list, but you can find everything here.

Also, the companies are owned by Arabs...

So, frankly, this is a very stupid idea!

40. But MY isn't normally lockstep with the ME Muslim countries.
The culture, politics, and "flavor" of Malaysia don't really feel like either the ME Muslim countries nor the SE Asian ones. This has particularly been the case over the past 5-7 years, as MY increasingly tries to lure high-tech hardware plants to the country.

32. That'll go over like a lead balloon with the common folk
Remember when "New Coke" came out and everyone was scrambling to get their hands on the last precious bottles of the original stuff? That's what it will be like in these countries. I've traveled extensively and Coke is almost the water of life to people everywhere.

Maybe they should research our Prohibition era. Then they can get ready for the underground SpeakEasys where people will meet to drink the contraband Coke and other US products.

33. Oh the ironies...
first of all, our manufacturing base is in the toilet. so this is a very hollow threat.

and what we do make is a lot of plastic crap which is, by the way, made with...OIL. Which is imported from...Muslim nations.

I know this is a very general gloss over, but you get the idea.

sigh.
