Gentlemen, Start Your Campaigns (Bush Courts NASCAR Dads)
President Takes the Race for 'NASCAR Dads' to the Daytona 500

Monday, February 16, 2004; Page A01

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 15 -- President Bush cued the engines of the Daytona 500 on Sunday afternoon and then settled in for a dizzying view of NASCAR's biggest race as he courted a rugged crowd the GOP considers its own.

The White House described Bush's overnight trip to Florida as non-political, meaning that taxpayers -- not Bush's reelection campaign -- will pick up the tab. But the election-year agenda was clear from the magnificent presidential photo shots and the red, white and blue touring bus that the Republican National Committee deployed at the track for a big voter registration drive.

Although NASCAR officials insist their fans have steadily diversified, stock-car races remain a refuge from political correctness, with cigarettes and buckets of fried chicken welcome in the stands. Beer is sold in towering 16-ounce cans known as "tall boys." Bush's motorcade was greeted by several men waving Confederate flags from atop the roofs of their pickups.

Even in this conservative and largely adoring crowd, however, there were signs of trouble for Bush, whose job-approval ratings have dropped to the lowest of his presidency amid questions about the basis for war in Iraq.

Harry Meeks, 55, an owner of health clubs in Orlando, said he voted for Bush in 2000 but is considering the Democrats for the first time in his life. "Let's face it, the economy isn't that great, and there was deceit about the war," Meeks said. "He needs to come clean on Iraq and come up with a real program for the economy that benefits people who don't make more than $200,000 a year."

3. Did you notice Mark Martin (Gore / Kerry supporter) was out early
His car blew up early. I wonder if someone fiddled with it because he supports Kerry and other Dems.

Was disappointed. I'm a die hard roush fan, with Martin being my main man. First Biffle, then Martin, and even Burton.

Oh, well. I wish I hadn't had to see ol' dubya there hoggin the spotlight as if he's a REAL fan.

5. "Bush's motorcade was greeted by several men waving Confederate
flags from atop the roofs of their pickups" WTF is that all about?

:wtf:

(BTW, I just returned from a 3-day trip to Georgia. And, I did not see a single Confederate flag or a Bush / Cheney bumper sticker.)

8. Oh, the irony.....
NASCAR: a sport (sic) that glorifies reckless endangerment, ego-maniacally competitive road rage, driving around in circles like a dogs chasing their tails, encouraging the widespread waste of a finite, heavily polluting natural resource.

Resident DUHbya promotes NASCAR the same way Bill Gates promotes computers: in his own interest and those of powerful corporate cronies who profit from our addiction to automobiles.

The automobile is the central means by which the elite maintain their position at the top of the economic ladder, and, maintain they're control over all, local to global, economic structures.

It's also ironic that most people don't see the irony, and most of the rest won't admit the truth of our situation. The Bush Klan have been among the "induced automobile-dependency" conspirators since WW1. It's a very Skull n' Bones kind of thing.

NASCAR is even worse than football, another (sic) sport.
