China finds major dinosaur site
Source: BBC

By Steve Jackson
BBC News

Scientists in China say they believe a group of dinosaur fossils discovered in the east of the country could be the largest collection ever found.

The researchers, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, say they have unearthed 7600 dinosaur bones since March in Shandong province.

Most of the bones date back to the late Cretaceous period which is around the time when dinosaurs became extinct.

The scientists hope the find will help to explain why the creatures died out.

1. Ecologically, what is now China was the Garden of Eden in many ways.

Hopefully, the Chinese gov't. will recognize that animal/environmental conservation and green building/farming practices are the
best way of ensuring a happy future for their country and many of the endangered species many Chinese consume on a daily basis.

14. I wouldn't bet on it. The industrialization of China will be the end of this planet.

21. Your hyperbolic language is a stranger to facts.
The environmentally rapacious industrialization of the West has contributed much more to "the end of this planet" than
China's recent rise.

22. It's a common sense conclusion. China's industrialization is in its early stages.

Wait until their standard of living increases on a large scale. That's not even counting India. Imagine 2 billion more people driving cars and consuming like Americans.

And counting on the Chinese government to do anything good for the environment is hilariously naive.

Oh yeah, and cite some specific facts for what you say because the last time I checked China is the world's largest emitter of carbon.

I know, though...globalization is the greatest thing in the world, and there are no natural limits. The world can sustain unlimited growth.

15. You betcha!
Actually, I love this stuff. Used to lecture about dinosaurs as an elementary school student in the early '60s (seriously). You know, those slow reptiles.

Love the shoe video. I'm stealing it.

18. Steal away!
It wasn't mine to begin with...

Used to lecture about dinosaurs as an elementary school student in the early '60s

I did the same thing! Fourth grade, 1962-63. The most controversial statement I made was that humans didn't live with dinosaurs. I made the statement that the big lizards were all dead by the time man arrived on the scene. Then one day I was challenged: one kid on the playground said to me, "If the dinosaurs were all dead, then what did man eat?" I was at a lost for an explanation. I sensed my reputation as an playground paleontologist was on the line, and since many of our classmates were standing there waiting for me to answer, I had to come up with something to save face, so I blurted out, "The leftovers! The dead dinosaurs that were lying around!'

This seem to satisfy him and the others and I knew then and there I had a career in academia...

A true story!

20. Cool story. I was in 6th grade in 1962-63.
Gawd, I'm old now. But, I DO have my rubber dinosaurs from the time. My brother and I played with them endlessly. I love them still. I never faced that question; of course, men and dinosaurs did not co-exist.

Unless you are from Alaska.

4. mega fauna and micro fauna
across the eras, there have been super sized and mini sized animals. Not a "dinosaur" per se, there was a 25 foot long monitor lizards who lived on the subcontinent of austrailia.

'China' found dinosaur bones ?

Really ? .... Did the whole country lift up from the earth and mosey on over to the desert with a rock hammer and a sieve ? .... There have been many great finds in China this last decade, but I can assure you : 'China' did not find a single one: PEOPLE did ....

I put the over/under on a religious crack at 5 when I opened the thread. Was I right because of post 2 or was I wrong because of post 7?

10. On second thought....
The "Garden of Eden" reference in post 1 might qualify. In any case, I was way late with the Jesus holding the baby dino post. I'll work harder on it.
