Former Police Commissioner To Be Arraigned (Bernie Kerik)
Source: NY1

Embattled former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik is due back in a Westchester County courtroom today.

Kerik is set to be arraigned in federal court in White Plains.

Earlier this month, Kerik was indicted on charges he failed to disclose income on his 2002 and 2005 tax returns and falsified information on a loan application for the purchase of an apartment in the Bronx.

Kerik previously pleaded not guilty to wide-ranging corruption charges, including accepting $255,000 in renovations to that same Bronx apartment from a company seeking city contracts.

A very under-reported news story. A 16-count indictment was filed late last year for charges that included lying to White House officials during the nomination process, accepting mob-tied money for renovations to his apartment, and tax fraud. Earlier this month, feds accused him of having embarked on a "crime spree." His trial begins in January.

Yet MSM has been almost silent on the story.

3. The only good thing about Bernie Kerak...
The only good thing about Bernie Kerak is that as Rudy Guiliani's "right hand man" he kept Rudy Guiliani from even attempting any further political career. Hopefully at some point Rudy Guiliani will get caught as well. And hopefully when he does the Bushes will go down with him.

When he prosecuted Harry and Leona Helmsley, people forget both were charged in the original indictments, Guiliani wanted to try them first in the media. So he got a federal judge to issue a gag order to prevent them from responding to the charges so to speak.

The federal judge who issued the gag order was George HW Bush's first cousin.

6. I expect Guiliani is part of the reason Kerik's indictment and trial is getting no media

Guiliani would be right to worry if the media started taking apart Kerik's life as they are currently doing to Blago's life.

11. More than likely it's the Bushes...
More than likely it's the Bushes keeping the lid on rather than Guiliani since the Bushes have had their hands in quite a bit of Guiliani's antics through the years. People really need to finally wake up about the Bushes. And those who serve them. Including the Clintons and apparently now Barack Obama. The one thing the American people really did not want is the Defense Department of George W Bush remaining in place. But there it is. In place.

Whose SEC by the way turned its head to Bernie Madoff? Again, a huge chunk of Jewish wealth has been wiped out. Along with quite a few liberal organizations that supported liberal causes. I don't think it's a coincidence. Quite a few others, and growing number of others, don't either.

20. Not necessarily true....
There is another good thing about both him and Giuliani. I lived there through the 70's and 80's and what those two did to the city in terms of cleaning it up was phenomenal. Its almost unrecognizable to people who've lived there in the past. For that I give them credit. That being said, I have no problem throwing the book at Bernie.

8. Kerick also stained our efforts in Iraq
I read in the book "Imperial Life in The Emerald City" Kerick would go out on night raids with a gang of thugs & do some "policing"

They kicked him out after a short time.

10. Nah, I think Bernie goes to jail
He's just far enough away from the administration that making a connection to Bush will be too hard for the bulldogs of the Fourth Estate. While they can ferret through months of telephone calls in trying to put together a non-existent connection between Obama and Blagojevich, trying to figure out whether Bush and Kerik had any relationship is just too much for the poor dears.

12. Who is defending him?
I don't recall ever seeing who his attorney is. I wonder who in their right mind would defend him. Although honestly attorneys never cease to amaze me. Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld started the Innocence Project and then turned around and defended OJ Simpson. Which is why quite a few refuse to support the Innocence Project.

13. I support the innocence project. Of course I also support due process and
the right to a fair trial and the right to a defense.

Who in their right mind would want to live in a country where people are tried in the press and unpopular defendants can't get representation?

17. Victims deserve fairness as well..
What about Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman? Did they receive fairness in a trial where defense attorneys pulled every trick in the book to create doubt despite obvious evidence? Sorry but I will never give a dime to the Innocence Project and hail two heroes who are not heroes. Neither will quite a few others. "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit."

The glove fit before it shrank a little after being soaked in mud and after OJ stopped taking his anti-inflammatory medicine which caused his hands to swell. Wonder which of the "Dream Team" figured out the glove had shrunk and which of the "Dream Team" realized that if OJ stopped taking his anti-inflammatory medicine his hands would swell.

23. The Rule of Law and fairness.
Baby Snooks: "Sorry but I will never give a dime to the Innocence Project and hail two heroes who are not heroes."

I can empathize with your feelings. Attorneys in trials, civil and criminal, are there to represent the rights of the parties they represent.

I will donate on your behalf.

Were you or a loved one on death row or sentenced to prison for a crime for which you or they were innocent, you perhaps would welcome the talents of attorneys skilled in the science of law.

There are well over 200 exonerated defendants who do consider attorneys at the various Innocence Projects as heroes.

14. Don't know, but I hope he has the best attorneys money can buy
Because when this slimy bastard is convicted, I don't want to hear any whining from the usual quarters about how Good Old Bernie was the victim of a witch hunt, railroaded and scapegoated by those librul meanies. And anyone who can't quite fathom the need for everyone (even O.J. Simpson) to have good quality legal representation will probably find all sorts of fault with any attorneys.

18. The way OJ was convicted?
Justice in this country is for the rich. And then, in most cases, it is not justice. Not for the victims.

If we had public defenders who served the defendents instead of the courts that appoint them we wouldn't need the Innocence Project.

21. I can't answer for the LA District Attorney
How they missed convicting Simpson of murder, God only knows. But I'd like to see every defendant get the same quality legal representation, so that when our society locks up a criminal, public confidence can be high that justice was served. Then indeed there wouldn't be a need for the Innocence Project. Your thinking is muddled, however, if you think that Simpson's verdict of not guilty means that justice is for the rich. What that particular case means is that the state failed to prove to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt that Simpson was guilty (a failure I apportion about 60% to the prosecution and 40% to Judge Ito, who failed to run a very organized trial), which is a far different kettle of fish than the cases taken on by the Innocence Project.

If you have some ideas for a better system of establishing guilt or innocence of criminal defendants, by all means contact your local legislators.

22. Kerik pleads not guilty in new corruption indictment (CNN)
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik pleaded not guilty in federal court Monday to a revised indictment charging him in a corruption and tax evasion case, according to a spokesman for the New York District Attorney.

The revised indictment includes two new counts of aiding the filing of false returns and a charge involving making false statements while applying for a housing loan, spokesman Herbert Hadad of the district attorney's office told CNN.

Kerik is accused of failing to report more than $500,000 in income between 1999 and 2004, said Patricia Haynes, the IRS agent in charge of the case.

Prosecutors allege Kerik received and concealed benefits of about $255,000 in renovations to his Riverdale, New York, apartment from a company seeking to do business with the city of New York.

Revisions to the original indictment, which included charges of corruption, conspiracy and tax evasion, bring to 15 the number of counts against Kerik.
