Newsday: 1971 Photo of Kerry (w/ Fonda) Doctored
1971 Photo of Kerry Doctored

By Michael Rothfeld
Staff Writer

http://www.newsday.com/ny-kerry0215,0,4733861.story?coll=ny-top-headlines

As a 20-year-old photographer documenting the country's struggle over the Vietnam War, Ken Light snapped the picture of John Kerry at a peace rally in Mineola. It captured the future senator alone at a podium, squinting into the sun.

Light did not photograph Jane Fonda on that warm June Sunday in 1971. The actress, who is reviled by many Vietnam veterans for her vocal stance against the war, did not even attend.

But when opponents of the Democratic presidential hopeful began e-mailing Light's picture to one another four days ago, it depicted Fonda standing by Kerry's side. The photo had been doctored.

"I'm horrified," said Light, 52, who grew up in East Meadow and now heads the graduate photojournalism program at the University of California at Berkeley. "I think this kind of alteration is probably one of the scariest forms of trickery, particularly when it's done against a political candidate."

26. Newsday isn't "mainstream"?
FYI it is a major newspaper. It probably has more readers every day than the pay channels(only 3 million combined on their best day). Newsday is mainstream.

There was a long thread on FreeRepublic about this a few days ago. A Freeper took credit for the photoshopping.

6. There is a photo with Fonda and Kerry which is apparently real...
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 11:02 AM by elperromagico
The only problem with that photo is that Kerry and Fonda aren't even near one another:

That's Kerry in the background, about three rows behind, and to the left of, "Hanoi Jane."

I have yet to see the doctored photo, but I guess this photo wasn't sufficiently damning. "Oh, no! Kerry was in the same general area as Jane Fonda! How dare he?!?"

11. Here a link to the docotored photo
On Snopes the debunking site:

http://www.snopes.com/photos/politics/kerry2.asp

The person doing the fake also decided to put an AP Photo tag on it. I think the AP (and other organizations) are extremely legalistic about things like that, so they may have lawyers already looking for the source.

The NY Times made mention of a second photo on Friday, and then on Saturday they also mentioned that the second photo was a fake, but they didn't print the photo.

NewsMax definitely put the photo out for awhile before it disappeared without a mention.

19. Excellent
I hope the AP does find the fraud and prosecute. AND name him!! Gee, I wonder if it was a repug that doctored the photo.

38. Can't Photoshop detect a digital watermark
I'll check it when I get home - I doubt the person was stupid enough to apply this identity mark to it, but never underestimate the stupidity of a freeper.

22. I've done better pics with my cheap $19 software prog.
That's so transparently fake as to be ridiculous. Apparently there were two suns in the sky that day, because Fonda's being lit on her left side, and Kerry's being lit on his right.

Republicans must think we Americans are a gullible lot. Of course, if it's necessary to point out in an article that the photo is a fake... perhaps they're right.

It's a GOP tradition.

most of them ran the one with Kerry sitting three rows behind her. As if that proved they were, like, intimate or something.

Sheesh.

18. Vitello has been telling it like it is since the beginning
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 11:33 AM by Monica_L
He's one of the few who has the guts to do so. He nailed it here:

And that, in some ways, is the very definition of what campaign politics has become in our time: giving people ammunition for their gut prejudices. It was the core principle of the GOP's "Southern Strategy," wooing whites with propaganda about Democrats as enablers of the poor, the blacks and the commies. It is the core principle of the Democrats' claim to be the party of "the people," while Republicans represent the rich, though they are all -- the lot of them, Democrats and Republicans -- beholden mainly to the rich.

Appeared on Saturday, I think, both the genuine and the doctored photo. So the mainstream press has certainly been talking about the fakery.

40. Software Let's You Manipulate People in Video
I recall reading about a year ago that MIT (I think) had developed software that lets you take video and process it so that the people in it appear to say anything you wanted them to. We now see this technique used routinely in tv commercials where magpies talk and Lassie does kung fu.

At what point do we stop trusting digital imagery altogether?

Here's an interesting article on video deception.
