Hospital rebels cut Blair majority to 35

The Government's majority was cut last night from 164 to just 35 - its lowest level since Tony Blair came to power - as Labour MPs rebelled against his flagship reforms of the National Health Service.

Sixty-two Labour MPs backed an amendment to kill off plans for foundation hospitals and another 72 abstained.

Their defiance of Government whips illustrated the growing anger at Mr Blair's plans to modernise the health and higher education systems.
