500 workers at The Seattle Times to take week unpaid
Source: SeattlePI

About 500 managers and non-union workers at The Seattle Times are being asked to take a week off without pay as financial troubles mount.

Company spokeswoman Jill Mackie says workers can take the time off in a weeklong chunk or a day at a time between now and February. She said she didn't immediately have details on how much money the Times expects to save.

It's the latest in a series of dire steps by the company, which has had three rounds of layoffs this year.

I have noticed the paper has been shrinking recently. Extras are being cut, including a couple comics I liked, entertainment reviews, overall size. Paper newspapers are having difficulties.

1. I feel bad for the workers; I I hate the right-leaning Times, though.

6. My feelings exactly. Our local RW rag, The SF Chronicle,
HAs huge guest editorials from Insurance Industry hacks, er I mean, CEO's, on how they are really really needed by Obama administration to help us figure out how to provide health insurance for everyone.

Try writing a letter with an opposing opinion, and it will not be published.

4. It's the non-union workers who are being "asked" to take an unpaid vacation
I wonder if those workers think collective bargaining is such a bad concept after all.

3. I'm a bit at a loss as to how one paper could have 500 managers
and are there union employees who are not getting laid off? The wording doesn't make that clear.
