Their stories are a classic example of heroism and courage. The three, though of varied socio-economic background, shared one thing in common: the ability to dare the odds and tread where even angels would not. And for their acts of bravery, Khalil Bala, Dorcas Ayodele and Omolade Rasaq (who is disabled) have been awarded the 2008 Indomie Independence Day Scholarship Award for Heroes of Nigeria.

According to the Chief executive officer, Dufil Prima Foods Plc, Mr. Deepak Singhal, the winners were given the awards for their outstanding acts of bravery and courage in the face of disability and illness.

Bala, 14, who won the first prize, went home with a scholarship worth N1 milion and a trophy; Ayodele, 10, who came second was honoured with N750,000 worth of scholarship, while the third prize winner, Omolade, got N500,000 worth of scholarship, for their acts of courage. “From saving their loved ones in the hour of need to rising against challenges and limitations of society, these young brave hearts have proved that they were really daring,” he said.

According to him, the first prize winner, Bala, saved his baby sister from a raging inferno that gutted their house in Kano. Khalil, he said, had escaped from the fire before he heard the cry of his sister inside the burning building; Bala dared the inferno, ran inside it and saw his sister to safety. Singhall added that Khalil was picked out of the rubbles half dead.
