White House Admits Bush Lied in 2002 State of The Union Over Al Qaeda Obta
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 08:28 PM by WannaJumpMyScooter
White House Admits Bush Lied in 2002 State of The Union Over Al Qaeda Obtaining U.S. Nuke Plant Plans -- Democracy Now Pacifica Networks.

The Bush administration has been forced this week to admit that one of the most explosive claims of President Bush's 2002 State of the Union address was not based on factual evidence.

Bush claimed that the U.S. has discovered in Afghanistan detailed plans of U.S. nuclear plants. On Monday night the White House told the Wall Street Journal that Bush's statement admitted no such plans had ever been found.

This story has resurfaced this month after a commissioner on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission responded to an inquiry of Greenpeace and that the NRC was aware of no evidence that diagrams of nuclear plants had been found in Afghanistan.

Funny, is not lying to Congress perjury? Or is it only perjury when you are a Democrat?

1. perjury (n)
the crime of intentionally lying after being duly sworn (to tell the truth) by a notary public, court clerk or other official.

I don't think * was under oath. But there may be a separate penalty for lying to Congress. Don't know about that one.

13. The SOTU speech is a requirement, It is sworn testimony
before a joint session of Congress.
It is perjury.

14. Article 2, Section 3 says
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 09:02 PM by cardlaw
"(The President) shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union"

It does not say he has to give a speech; it does not say it has to be before a joint session of Congress. Until the 20th Century, the SOTU was delivered to Congress in the form of a written statement.

15. here is the Constitutional requirement to report
the State of the Union, as specified in the Constitution:

Section 3. He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper; he shall receive ambassadors and other public ministers; he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and shall commission all the officers of the United States.

any testimony during this address (imho) is required to be truthful - anything less would be perjury

28. Well....
* is ALWAYS under oath. "I GW Boosh, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic", yadda ,yadda, yadda. He lied under oath, therefore he perjured himself.

36. Your definition is not the whole truth
What is being lied about has to be pertinent. Many people lie all the time under oath but are not prosecuted for perjury because it wasn't pertinent to the issue. That is why President Clinton was never charged with any crime. He did not commit one by definition.

5. My thoughts exactly......
the media has bent over backward not to question the Bush administration. John Dean has written several articles on this and blames the media for not being the watchdog they should be.

9. The SOTU address is required by the Constitution
At the junta's installation, Bush made the following statement:

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Lying to Congress is not preserving protecting or defending the Constitution or faithully executing the office. Sounds like perjury to me, unless the RW wants to argue that habitual preposterous lying is the best of his abilities.

18. Hahahah! How sweet it is.

http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1042785/posts?page=101

But until the moment when Clinton lied under oath I was willing to accept him as the president of the United States. Make no mistake, my disdain for Bill Clinton had nothing to do with him abusing his underlings sexually, it had everything to do with him breaking the law and violating his oath to uphold the US Constitution, two things he did when he perjured himself.

21. Wow!! The administration drops this stuff on us on a Friday evening
and then walks away hoping it will die before Monday. Or at least it seems that way to me.

The media should be howling & yapping like a bunch of wolves and coyotes
over this bit of news.

"The Bush administration has been forced this week to admit that one of the most explosive claims of President Bush's 2002 State of the Union address was not based on factual evidence."

34. Anybody remember this famous Pug mantra:
"It's not about the sex, it's about the lying." Or how about, "If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't mind the investigation."

And, then, my personal fave rave:

"If there's that much smoke, there has to be some fire."

dbt

Just remembered another one (used by PillBoy around 6.8 million times): "You can't have it both ways."
