SAN FRANCISCO - A judge rejected a request Friday by anti-gay-marriage groups to halt scores of same-sex marriages that have been taking place in San Francisco with the blessing of the city’s new mayor.

California Superior Court Judge James Warren refused to issue a temporary restraining order to halt the ceremonies. He said the groups seeking the order — the Campaign for California Families and the Alliance Defense Fund — did not present convincing evidence that such marriages would cause irreparable harm.

Warren scheduled another hearing for Tuesday.

The decision came after scores of gays and lesbians began getting married Thursday at City Hall after Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the city to allow same-sex marriages. He said gays and lesbians had the right to wed under the state’s equal protection clause.

Things seem to be going great today! Of course, this is just the normal pendulum swinging...

It's been in motion big-time ever since the Supreme Court knocked down the sodomy laws.

We get some great strides forward, then some backlash.

You know what part is next, right? Huge backlash???

Still, we'll enjoy the moment while we can, and fight on regardless!!!

8. I wonder what their arguments for the TRO were?
What on earth did they come up with that could possibly have suggested ireperable harm? I looked at their stupid website to see if they had a pleading up so I could post it here, but no luck.

9. I love that it's gotten so specific:

Not only did they lose, but the anti-gay groups had to be in the position of "trying to stop" actual people, whose faces and stories were in the papers today, from getting married. It isn't just an abstraction anymore. The SF mayor is a hero. Historically, this will ultimately be on a par with Rosa Parks refusing to get in the back of the bus, I think.

11. WOW! I was thinking about Miss Rosa Parks today, wondering what she

would have said to anyone who had told her, Now Rosa, this isn't going to help at all. If you don't just do as you're told and stand up without complaining, we might decide that you can't ride the bus at all!

10. "irreparable harm"--sheesh
Yeah, people might make a loving commitment to each other and that would...that would...

Good for the mayor and good for the judge!

14. Uh oh...irreparable harm?
Does this mean my husband and I have to get a divorce?

We have been married for 25 years...he is not going to like this.

LOL

12. Wa-hoooo!
Now THAT is a sweet decision!

I made sure to check with every married straight person I knew today to see if their marriges were still intact, and I can answer in the affirmative.

"Irreparable harm" my ass! :)

I'm sorry I'm going to miss the shindig tonight -- hopefully I'll make it back to City Hall tomorrow for more fun.

15. the sky is falling!
Irrerarable harm?

What irreparable harm has come to dozens of countries in W. Europe, Australia and Canada who have recognized same sex marriages?

I'm surprised the media does not question these anti gay zealots about this "irreparable harm" theory.
