WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow on Friday said President Bush is "serious" about cutting the government's record budget deficit.

In prepared testimony that was similar to previous testimonies given in the last two weeks on Capitol Hill since the proposed budget was unveiled, Snow said, "Make no mistake: President Bush is serious about the deficit."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said on Friday the government should aim for a balanced budget and promised to hold China's "feet to the fire" to encourage it to loosen the yuan currency's peg to the dollar.

He told the Senate Budget Committee that President Bush's fiscal 2005 budget pledge to halve record deficits was only a step in the right direction.

"We really ought to be pointing toward a convergence to zero. That's where we need to go. We need to get on a path to a truly balanced budget," Snow said during lawmaker questions.

1. serious about running them up even more?

He hasn't cared about deficits for 3 years. How CONVENIENT that he's "serious" about them now.

2. For 3 1/2 years, the frat boy parties. Now, it's time to cram for exams.
Typical. It's nice to know the adults are in charge.

3. BS.....if he was serious about he wouldn't ask for the tax cuts to be
made permanent. The Concord Coalition, and many other people, warned about this huge deficit more than a year ago. Their budgets are strictly political.

6. Ominous words: he has threatened to block congressional
spending to reduce deficit. He is hiding the cost of the wars in Iraq & Afganistan. he is setting up a scenario in which all of discretionary budget is allocated to defense and security. this sets the stage for eliminating all non military and police spending because of crisis. This was an objective (bankrupting the federal government because that was the only way people would allow the social service network to be yanked) from early days. He has successfully walked along a path leading to that possibility. Think about it. call me paranoid, but....

7. Not paranoid, that is exactly what is happening
Google Grover Norquist. It will chill you to the bone. They want to strangle the government in a bathtub. They will completely destroy this country if given a second term in office.
