30 Same Sex Couples Attempting to Apply for Marriage Licenses in Houston

1. Good - taking a page from the voting rights campaigns.

This is a great strategy. I hope they are being polite but firm. And if there are some older lesbian and gay couples send them in first. The picture on the front page of the WP was priceless this morning - showed an elderly lesbian couple applying for a marriage license in San Francisco. "Who could be afraid of that?" was my first thought. Just as with the civil rights campaigns of the 60's, we can defeat bigotry and homophobia with a nonviolent demand for basic human rights.

It's been just over 6 months since this was possible. Apparently more than half are American couples. After the first few pics of boring 50-something twosomes taking their vows, the press tired of the novelty, and decided it just wasn't controversial enough to keep covering. Ho hum.

Anyway, Vancouver hasn't collapsed in a heap of smouldering brimstone yet. And as for BC's families and communities ... well, the recent round of provincial government cutbacks to education and social assistance are doing far more damage than same-sex weddings could ever do!
