Rowland lawyer (Now Judge) says governor owes firm $100,000
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Gov. John G. Rowland nominated his former attorney to a judgeship, while owing the man's firm $100,000 in legal fees, the judge testified Friday.

The issue came up during James K. Robertson's Jr.'s confirmation hearing for a seat on the state's Superior Court. He was appointed by Rowland as an interim Superior Court judge in November and is seeking confirmation.

Robertson testified he had agreed to a deferred payment of the legal fees, a concept he said was approved by State Ethics Commission Executive Director Alan Plofsky. Robertson said he expects, and has always expected, the money to be paid.

The agreement, signed last March, said the firm understood "that because of the constraints of public service, you will probably not have sufficient funds to pay for our services on a current basis," Robertson said.
