MarketWatchMike Satzow, owner of North Country Smokehouse in Claremont, N.H., has been named by Meatingplace as its 2009 Richard L. Knowlton Innovation Award honoree.
This year, Satzow was selected to recognize his unflagging dedication to improving his community, his company and his industry. Satzow created an economic development organization that has benefited Claremont during difficult economic times for almost 30 years and he has served on boards or committees dedicated to improving nearly every aspect of life in the community.
Meanwhile, his company has gained national and international fame for its artisan bacon, ham, sausage and other smoked meat products. Finally, fellow industry executives have said Satzow is their first call when they need advice or feedback, and Satzow has served on the board of the North American Meat Processors Association for the better part of 20 years.
"It's an honor for us to recognize Mike's extensive contributions with the Knowlton Award," says Mark Lefens, President of Marketing & Technology Group, publisher of Meatingplace. "He truly embodies the best of what the meat industry has to offer, both inside the plant and out."

Too often in troubled times we're so quick to condemn excesses that we forget- in all our communities, there are cool business people like Mike Satzow.
Props to Mike (even though I'm not- and maybe you aren't much into smoked meats).
