Bush Officials to Announce Economic Agreement in China

The Bush Administration is hoping that bilateral economic talks with China scheduled for later this week will produce enough concrete results to persuade President-elect Barack Obama to keep up talks during his tenure.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson plans to sign a bilateral economic agreement with his Chinese counterparts as part of the Strategic Economic Dialogue meetings, according to two senior Treasury officials.

Speaking at a media briefing, Alan Holmer, a special envoy for China and the Strategic Economic Dialogue, and Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs David H. McCormick declined to offer details of the forthcoming agreement.

However, Holmer and McCormick said they hope it will highlight the broad strategic goals agreed on by the two countries, along with the short-term "deliverables" that demonstrate real progress is being made.

While Obama's representatives will not be part of the official delegation and will not participate in closed meetings between U.S. and Chinese officials, McCormick and Holmer stressed that they would be fully briefed on plans in advance and actions taken at the meeting.
