PETA Has Beef With Town of Slaughterville
SLAUGHTERVILLE, Okla. (AP)--Residents of this central Oklahoma community have a beef over an animal rights group's attempt to raise awareness of animal abuse.

Slaughterville administrator Marsha Blair received a letter from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, urging the town to change its name from Slaughterville to Veggieville.

``I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, our 800,000 members and supporters, and other compassionate Americans to ask Slaughterville to change its name _ which conjures up images of the violent and bloody deaths of terrified chickens, pigs and cows--to Veggieville, a friendly name honoring a heart-healthy and compassionate alternative to animal corpses,'' the letter said.

PETA, based in Norfolk, Va., promises to donate $20,000 in veggie burgers to a school district nearest to the town, said Bruce Friedrich, director of PETA's vegan campaigns. A vegan is someone who abstains from consuming animal products.

2. As I have said before.
PETS = Sad, Misguided, and ill-informed.

Unfortunately they have a tendancy to do things that make the rest of the animal rights/environmenal protection crowd look bad.

16. Thanks DARK, for putting it that way
This way, I don't have to flame on about that group. Truly, PETA's M/O brings down some bad chit on those folks who are concerned but balanced in their view of animals and animal cruelty.

I think they must all be on hallucinogenics 24/7 (ahem..not that there's anything wrong with that...lol)

5. Oh, come on. PETA was taken over by right wing plants years ago
That's the only explanation I can come up with. These town 'renaming' campaigns they've gone on were what finally convinced me.

6. PETA is STILL trying to give away those nasty veggie-burgers? LOL
They must have a freezer full of those moldy things.

05/06/03 Hamburg, New York, in an attempt to get them to change their name to "Veggieburg." To sweeten the deal, PETA has offered every school in the city $15,000 in free veggie burgers.

10/22/2003 Rodeo, California...PETA said it would donate $20,000 worth of veggie burgers to local schools if the county changes the area's name to "Unity".

April 28, 2003 PETA says it will donate $15,000 worth of vegetarian patties to area schools if officials change the name of Hamburg, Pa., to Veggieburg.

10. A dire threat
And if the town refuses to change its name, PETA will send them $30,000 in free veggie burgers.

7. I called my brother,
the family crack-up, about this. He said, "You know, I believe there is a place for all creatures...preferably next to the mashed potatoes!" I nearly fell out of my chair. Is anybody surprised that with stunts like this, PETA is summarily dismissed by most everybody? I'm reminded of the scene in the movie PCU when they throw the meat on the PETA wannabe protestors. What a waste of good meat! I do think that our treatment of food animals could be improved, but PETA is over the top about it.

think the Cattlemans' association would give them 20,000 rib-eyes to change it to Angus Street?

9. In upstate NY, if memory serves...
...PETA tried to get the town of "Fishkill" to rename itself "Fishsave." This disregards utterly that the "-kill" suffix is either Dutch or Hugenot (I forget which) for "creek."

Disrespectful pinheads.

11. Is there a PETA-Robertson connection?
I just noticed: PETA is based in Norfolk. Robertson's bunch is in Virginia Beach, which is another Hampton Roads community.

Considering that both PETA and Robertson's group are crazier than shithouse rats, and they're both full of right-wingers, is there any possibility that they're connected?

12. I love PETA,
and think that you guys protest way too much over such tongue-in-cheek campaigns like this. They don't really think that these towns will change their names, you know.

PETA threads are such fun.

13. Yeah, but they don't like it when it's done back to them.
A radio station up there has an annual fishing tournament. They all shove off and bring back their catches right next to the PETA building. They started it (if I remember correctly) the year after PETA had people out at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving wearing nothing but sandwich boards, protesting the sale of furs.

And PETA has a beautiful waterfront building, there is definitely some money flowing through there from somewhere.

14. There's a village in Gloucestershire, England called 'Slaughter'.
As I recall, it means "muddy water". The English civil war was concluded here in the Cotswolds in the mid 17th century.

Should they rename the village? I think not!

17. Ah, yes....the group that talked about handing out....
a very graphic "your mommy's gonna kill your pets" comic books to preschoolers at the Boston Nutcracker.

I recall one PETA supporter on here stating that they didn't hand out a single flyer. I think this is probably because they were a) afraid of getting the shit beat out of them by an enraged parent or 50, and b) afraid of getting their asses thrown in jail on child endangerment and obscenity charges.

They find it a lot easier (and safer) to attack little old ladies wearing fur coats, rather than big burly bikers wearing leather. While cowardly in the extreme, I guess it shows that their not ENTIRELY insane....

PETA is a compete and total disgrace to the animal rights community....
